About Station 2 Station Cycle Trail

Station 2 Station Cycle Trail travels from Mt Nicholas Station to Walter Peak Station.  Both stations are only reachable from Queenstown by boat. Station 2 Station Cycle Trail tour includes Spirit of Queenstown Scenic Cruise as your method of transport to the start of the trail, as well as a ride aboard the TSS Earnslaw for your return to Queenstown.

Once you arrive at Mt Nicholas, you will be guided to the beginning of the cycle trail where a staff member can answer any of your questions. On the cycle trail, it is a self-guided cycle tour giving you the ability to travel at your own pace stopping where you please to take in the serenity, take photographs, or even watch some of the farm animals. The area between and around these two stations is some of the most scenic in the region!

The 14 kilometre stretch of gravel road is mostly flat and travels along the edge of Lake Wakatipu. As you bike along this breathtaking trail, it will really feel like you have the place to yourself! The views along the trail combined with the adventure of riding somewhere so isolated makes our Station 2 Station Cycle Trail one of the best outdoor activities in Queenstown!

The complete trip takes about 4 hours from the time you leave Queenstown until you return – making it the perfect half-day activity!

Who Can Ride Station 2 Station Cycle Trail?

The Station 2 Station Cycle Trail is an easy 14 kilometre gravel trail. The trail is mostly flat and is recommended for all fitness levels. We have high quality mountain bikes for hire that make the ride that much easier and enjoyable. You have up to two and a half hours to finish the trail and also have a shortcut available for those who prefer!

What Will You See?

Along the cycle trail, you can stop at any time and take in all the amazing views. These include views of the Humbolt Mountains towards Glenorchy, the steep peak of Cecil Peak, the rolling hills of the Mt Nicholas Station and much more. However, it’s not just the views you get to see.

Both the Mt Nicholas and Walter Peak Stations are working farms. This means you get to see all the farm animals along the way. With many different paddocks along the cycle trail as well as many free roaming, you’re never far from the animals that call these stations home. Both stations are merino wool farms which means you will get to see the sheep that produce this amazing wool. Some of the other animals you can see are farm dogs, horses, cows, and bulls. And in spring, lambs and calves too!

From the water, aboard the Southern Discoveries Spirit of Queenstown Scenic Cruise and the TSS Earnslaw you get a 360 degree view from Lake Wakatipu. On the way to the farm you will make a short stop in Bob’s Cove and have your captain explain the history of the lake and the Māori legend behind the lake’s shape.

Station 2 Station Cycle Trail has the option to include everything you could need for an amazing day out – including your bike rental and water bottle. If you’re looking to add to you adventure you can include a Mt Nicholas Farm Experience before you hit the trail.
