Milford Sound is one New Zealand’s most popular destinations, renowned for its towering mountains, lush rain forest and incredible wildlife. Adjoining Milford’s iconic Mitre Peak is Sinbad Gully, home to a large number of native bird and invertebrate species, and the Sinbad Sanctuary Project – a programme to protect them.

Driven by a commitment to protect and enhance this unique place in which we home, Southern Discoveries has been the principal sponsor of the project since it first started nearly 10 years ago in partnership with Fiordland Conservation Trust and the Department of Conservation.

As well as providing financial assistance, Southern Discoveries staff volunteer their time to help with trapping pests and surveying species, and the executive management team supports with planning and governance for the project.

Sinbad Gully is home to tokoeka/kiwi, whio/blue duck, weka, kākā, kea and rock wren, and is one of the last places where kākāpō were found in their natural habitat. The gully is also thought to have the most diverse communities of alpine lizards in world, with three species of threatened lizards living here – the Sinbad skink, Cascade gecko and cryptic skink.
