2022 Danube River Croatia to the Black Sea: Avalon Passion Dining Review

Destinations/Ports Series: 2022 Danube River Cruise Croatia to the Black Sea

This dining review will focus on both the meals we had during tours and the food onboard. I was very pleased with both.

Our first meal that was included for us was our lunch in Zagreb during our guided day tour. I was not expecting much from these meals as they are served banquet style with everyone getting the same dish unless they had allergies or a special diet. Our guides were so good at making sure that they had everything in place for those who were gluten free or vegan, they always checked and double checked for the folks who needed a special meals. Our first meal was a salad with local cheese, chicken with mushrooms and spatzle and then a lemon raspberry cheese cake for dessert. For a banquet style meal it was quite delicious.

Our first night Dinner was served pretty much as soon as we boarded the ship due to our bus delay. The meal was quite good and we all had some choices including steak, past and salmon, and some at our table even combined the pasta and the salmon.

After our day of touring Belgrade, our dinner that night featured a Serbian Beef Burek with an herb yogurt sauce. Ours were little individual pies, but generally they are made in large family style spirals. They offered a Serbian style pork loin and also potato dumplings. They also served for dessert Serbian Apple Cake which was also very good.

Continuing down the river between our morning stop a Gulubac fortress and our afternoon stop at Lepinski Vir, we enjoyed a buffet lunch of Serbian specialties including the little sausages called Cevapi, purple cabbage, Serbian pork roast, mixed vegetables and potato salad. For dinner we enjoyed dumpling soup and scalloped potato bake.

After our tour of Belegradchik and Viden, we had a regional buffet lunch with stuffed cabbage and a few other goodies. Dinner that night included Serbian ham, pork wellington with a cheese tuiles, and local wine. Good stuff!!!

Lets see if I can explain what we have below. This was our lunch in Valiko Tarnova, where we ate a beautiful hotel dining room overlooking the fortress. They presented a salad covered with local shredded cheese and also had olive oil and bread for dipping. I forgot to take a pictures before I dove into the salad, but it was very good and then we also had mushroom soup. This was included as part of our tour. Back on the ship, we enjoyed dinner with more regional ham, lobster tails, roast beef tenderloin, and a couple different fish options.
