A Brief History Of Minskoff Theatre
Located at 1515 Broadway, the Minskoff Theatre is a 1621-seat performance venue designed by architects Kahn and Jacobs. The theatre is on the third floor of One Astor Plaza and is named after Sam Minskoff and Sons, owners and builders of the plaza. The Minskoff Theatre opened in 1973 with a revival of Irene starring Debbie Reynolds. In 1981, the theatre hosted Miss Universe 1981, which brought it much attention. Featuring a walkway from 44th to 45th Street and a vast lobby featuring stunning artwork and an opulent design, the Minskoff Theatre is a sight to behold. Since 2006, the Minskoff Theatre has hosted the musical adaptation of the classic animated Disney movie, The Lion King.
To accommodate The Lion King, the theatre underwent some renovation work where the main lobby was redesigned to showcase gold leaf carved displays. Apart from The Lion King, the Minskoff Theatre has hosted many great productions, including King of Hearts, West Side Story, The Pirates of Penzance, Cabaret, Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat, Saturday Night Fever and more. .
