A Brief History Of Gershwin Theatre

Constructed by the Uris Brothers on the site of the former Capitol Theatre, and designed by Ralph Alswang, the theater opened as the Uris Theatre on 28 November, 1972. The musical Via Galactica starring Raul Julia was the premiere production at the Gershwin Theatre. For the majority of its lifetime, it operated as a conventional theater, except from 1974 to 1976, when it functioned as a concert hall. During the 37th Tony Awards on 5 June 1983, the theater was renamed to honor composer George and lyricist Ira Gerswhin. The Gershwin Theater has Broadway's highest seating capacity, and also houses the American Theater Hall of Fame in the lobby.
