London County Hall, more commonly known as County Hall, is a business and entertainment venue located on the south bank of River Thames. Originally functioning as the headquarters of the London County Council, County Hall now houses a variety of attractions, such as Namco Arcade Station, London Sea Life Aquarium and London Dungeon. Also housed within the venue is a performance space that hosts West End musicals and plays.

The London County Hall was constructed in 1922, with the work having started more than a decade back. The building was designed by architect Ralph Knott and officially opened on 17 July 1922 by King George V and Queen Mary. The primary building features Portland stone in an Edwardian Baroque style. There was additional construction work that was undertaken in 1936, 1939, and 1974 to create the North Block, South Block, and Island Block respectively.

The performance space, also called The Chamber, opened in 2015 under the management of Merlin Entertainments and has since hosted a couple of great shows that took full advantage of its unique structure. The Chamber was originally used as a council chamber for debates but has been brought back to the spotlight with a spirited production of Witness for the Prosecution. Witness for the Prosecution, adapted from Agatha Christie’s short story, has called many a West End theatres its home with the first production of the famed courtroom drama having opened in 1953 at the Winter Garden Theatre. With a story that has remained just as fresh and exciting as on the day it was first written, the play made its way back to West End in 2017 but this time with a twist! The London County Hall production is special primarily because of its staging. The show is performed at the Chamber, which is structured like a courtroom. Just the fact that you get to witness one of the most acclaimed courtroom dramas from inside an actual courtroom is special in itself. What elevates this special production is the talent attached to it both in front and behind the stage.

Richard Attlee stars as Dr. Wyatt with Richard Clothier as Sir Wilfrid Robarts, Charlotte Blackledge as Great/Ms. Clegg, Julian Curry as Mr. Justice Wainwright and Henry Reid as Leonard Vole. The gifted cast is backed up by a supremely gifted set of behind-the-stage professionals. The show is directed by Lucy Bailey and William Dudley has designed the sets. Mic Pool and Chris Davey are in charge of set and lighting design. Witness for the Prosecution opened on October 23rd, 2017 and is currently accepting booking till September 1st, 2019.

The Story

Like most courtroom dramas, Witness for the Prosecution begins with a murder. Who gets the sack? An old widow with money to spare who shared a strange connection with Leonard Vole and made him her principal heir before passing. Vole, a married man, is blamed for the murder. With all evidence pointing at Vole being the killer, the story shifts to high gear when Vole’s wife Romaine testifies in the court not in her husband’s defense but as a witness for the prosecution giving the story its title. What happens after this bewildering witness testimony? Does Vole prove his innocence? Why did Romaine testify against her husband? Get the answers to these questions at the end of the shocking finale of Witness for the Prosecution!

Access From Theatre Foyer To Seat: There are 33 steps to the galleries seating section from the main Chamber door which is situated at row B. Please note Row F of the stalls section is the only row which has step-free access. Also, all steps in the galleries section are narrow.

Level Access: : There is a lift available from the street level to the foyer and another lift from the foyer which leads to the stalls section only. Please note that there is no lift to the galleries section. These seats can be only accessed via stairs.

Restroom: Restrooms are available in the courtroom level. There are no restrooms available on the Galleries level.

Assistive Listening System: For people who are hard of hearing, there are hearing loops available for all the seats in the stalls. Please note that these hearing loops might not work for seats in the north or south gallery.
