The Perhentian Islands lie next to the northeastern coast of Peninsular Malaysia. They are so far to the north, that they could easily belong to Thailand. There were two very convincing reasons why we chose these islands instead of the famous Langkawi Islands: they are not touristy at all and you have a chance to see and swim with turtles.

A Perhentian szigetek Malajzia észak-keleti csücskénél fekszenek. Annyira északon, hogy az már majdnem Thaiföld. Annak pedig, hogy a híres Langkawi szigetek helyett inkább ezt választottuk, két oka van: az egyik, hogy ez a hely nem turistás, a másik pedig, hogy itt testközelből lehet teknősöket látni. És ennyi elég is volt.

The two main islands are Pulau Perhentian Kecil, which means Small Perhentian Island and Pulau Perhentian Besar, which (surprise-surprise) means Big Perhentian Island. The main difference between the two is that while Kecil is more of a party place, and you will definitely find nightlife there, Besar is quiet, laid-back, clean and it’s full of animals, which makes it a paradise for wildlife-lovers.

A Perhentian szigetek név egyébként két fő szigetet takar: Pulau Perhentian Kecil, ami azt jelenti, hogy Kis Perhentian sziget, és Pulau Perhentian Besar, ami pedig azt jelenti, hogy Nagy Perhentian sziget. A kettő között az a fő különbség, hogy míg Kecilen dübörög a zene és zajlik az éjszakai élet, addig Besar nyugodt, csöndes, tiszta és tele van mindenféle állatokkal, azaz a természetimádók paradicsoma.

How to get there? // Hogyan lehet ide eljutni?

That’s not simple. Which isn’t a problem actually, because it protects the place from the crowds. We wanted to get to the Perhentian Islands from the Taman Negara National Park, which was a long and complicated journey.

Na az nem egyszerű. De nem is baj, mert legalább nem jön ide a fél világ. Mi ugye a Taman Negara Nemzeti Parkból közelítettük meg a helyet, és ez biza egy hosszadalmas, többlépcsős folyamat volt.

First of all, we had to get to Jerantut somehow. Initially, we thought we’ll just jump on a wonky, old, local bus, but because these are very unreliable, the manager of the resort offered to take us by car. Of course, we had to pay for it, but we didn’t mind because it was comfortable and we also had a chance to chat with him.

Előszöris el kellett jutnunk valahogy Jerantutba. Eleinte egy helyi, rozoga buszt céloztunk be, de mivel ezek elég pontatlanok és beszámíthatatlanok, a hotelünk menedzsere felajánlotta, hogy elvisz autóval. Persze nem a két szép szemünkért, hanem ropogós ringgitekért cserébe, de mi nem bántuk, mert kényelmes volt és közben jól el is beszélgettünk.

We had to spend the night in Jerantut. Actually, only half of the night, because the Jungle Railway from Singapore to Northern Malaysia reaches Jerantut at 4:22am. We decided to try this train in order to experience travelling like a local. If you would like to do the same, you have to keep in mind the following things:

1. The train ticket is very cheap: we paid 17 ringgit each from Jerantut to Wakaf Bharu.
2. You should consider buying your ticket in advance because it gets sold out! We managed to book the last two tickets for this train online, and it turned out to be a good idea, because all the carriages were full. On top of that, no one could speak English at the station, so begging for tickets would have been a challenging situation.
3. It’s good to get to the station earlier, because trains here tend to arrive and also leave ahead of schedule!
4. Jerantut is a sh*thole dirty and unpleasant place, I think it’s one of the most horrible towns I’ve ever been to. It’s worth knowing this in advance, preparing yourself and managing your expectations.

Jerantutban meg kellett szállnunk egy éjszakára. Vagyis inkább félre, ugyanis a Szingapúrból induló dzsungel-vonat minden nap hajnali 4:22kor döcög át ezen a városon és megy tovább észak felé. Mi pedig a fejünkbe vettük, hogy kipróbáljuk, mert kíváncsiak voltunk, milyen úgy utazni, mint a helyiek. Ha valaki ezt a vonatot választja, akkor a következő dolgokat kell figyelembe vennie:

1. A vonatjegy nagyon olcsó: Jerantutból Wakaf Bharuba 17 ringgitért lehet eljutni.
2. Vonatjegyet mindenképpen előre kell vásárolni, mert elfogy! Mi neten utolsó pillanatban ugrottunk rá a két megmaradt jegyre, és milyen jól tettük, mert a vonat tényleg tele volt. Meg amúgy az állomáson senki nem tudott angolul, szóval érdekes szituáció lett volna megpróbálni felkönyörögni magunkat.
3. Az állomásra érdemes hamarabb kimenni, mert a vonatok itt hajlamosak idő előtt megérkezni, és tovább is menni!
4. Jerantut egy Isten háta mögötti rettenetes koszfészek, szerintem az egyik legborzasztóbb hely, ahol eddig jártam. Erre érdemes lelkileg felkészülni.

The train wobbled for 7 hours through forests, fields and jungle before it finally arrived at Wakaf Bharu. Here you have two options: you can either take a local bus to the Kuala Besut Jetty (The bus 639 gets you there in 90 minutes from Kota Bharu and it costs 6 ringgit), or you entrust a taxi driver with this task. Taxi drivers are usually waiting very patiently for the arrival of the Jungle Railway hoping that this way they can hunt some passengers. Obviously, the second option is faster, more comfortable, more expensive (around 80 ringgit), and there’s a higher chance for tired people like us to choose it.

A vonat 7 órán át döcög erdőn-mezőn-dzsungelen keresztül, míg megérkezik Wakaf Bharuba. Itt az ember megint két lehetőség közül választhat: vagy helyi busszal vergődik el a Kuala Besut nevű kikötőig (Kota Bharuból a 639es busszal ez másfél óra és 6 ringgitbe kerül), vagy pedig a dzsungel-vonatra türelmesen várakozó szemfüles taxisok egyikére bízza a feladatot. Mondanom sem kell, hogy a második opció gyorsabb, kényelmesebb, drágább (kb. 80 ringgit), és az ember nagyobb valószínűséggel választja egy nem átaludt éjszaka után.

Your tasks at Kuala Besut Jetty are the following: buy speedboat ticket (70 ringgit return) and island license (5 ringgit), put on a bright orange safety vest, find a seat between the eggs, cabbage and other random goods that are being transported to the local restaurants, and hold on to the boat for the next half an hour in order to avoid falling into the water.

Kuala Besutban a következő teendők várják az embert: hajójegyet (70 ringgit jövet-menet) és sziget-látogatási engedélyt (fejenként 5 ringgit) váltani, narancssárga mentőmellényt ölteni, elhelyezkedni a motorcsónakban a mindenféle tojások, káposzták, meg egyéb helyi vendéglőkbe tartó szállítmányok közé, végül pedig az elkövetkező fél órában nem vízbe potyogni.

If you decide to visit these islands, you’re better off wearing a backpack than struggling with a suitcase. The reason for this is that the speedboat can’t get close to the shore, so people have to either climb into a smaller boat or walk through a very unstable floating pier that has some sunken sections. Balancing with a suitcase is hard in both cases.

Aki ide látogat, mindenképp hátizsákkal tegye, ne pedig bőrönddel. Ennek a fő oka az, hogy a motorcsónak nem tud a parton kikötni, így a népek vagy egy kisebb csónakba kell átmásszanak, vagy pedig egy igen instabil úszó mólón kell a partra sétáljanak, ami nehezítésképpen néhol a víz alá merül. Bőrönddel egyensúlyozni egyik esetben sem ideális.

Coming here straight from Kuala Lumpur is a little bit easier: there are many domestic flights between the capital and Kota Bharu every day. This is how we travelled on our way back.

Ha valaki Kuala Lumpurból egyenesen jönne ide, akkor az út annyival egyszerűbb, hogy számtalan belföldi járat röpköd a főváros és Kota Bharu között. Mi így utaztunk visszafelé.

Where to stay? // Hol lehet megszállni?

We chose to stay in The Barat Perhentian resort, but to be honest, it doesn’t really matter which one you book. Apart from the prices they are all the same. The resorts are close to the shore (because the central part of the island is one big jungle) and consist of small huts. Most resorts run a restaurant as well, so every single evening you’ll find yourself trying to decide where to have dinner. Besides the huts and the restaurants there’s also a small shop where you can buy sunscreen, sweets and fizzy drinks, but if you need anything more special, make sure you bring it with you!

Mi a The Barat Perhentian nevű üdülőt választottuk, de amúgy szerintem teljesen mindegy. Az árakon kívül valószínűleg mind egyformák. Minden üdülő a part mentén található (mivel a sziget közepe egy dzsungel) és apró házikókból áll. Ezekhez általában tartozik egy-egy vendéglő, így az ember minden este azon agyalhat, hogy hol is vacsorázzon. Ezen felül van még egy kisbolt is, ahol a felhozatal kb. naptejből, édességekből és üdítőitalokból áll, szóval ha valakinek bármiféle speciális igénye van, azt még a szárazföldön szerezze be!

What to do/see? // Mit lehet itt látni/csinálni?

Lots and lots of things. Let’s go through them.

Rengeteg mindent. No de vegyük is sorra.

1. Tuna Bay // Tuna Öböl

In order to reach Tuna Bay, you can either walk through the jungle or take the taxi-boat. There you’ll find everything you’ve ever imagined while thinking of a perfect beach: soft white sand, turquoise water, shy crabs sunbathing on giant rocks, stingrays (I almost stepped on one, so be careful when you walk in the water) and colourful fish (most of them are friendly, but the pink ones act like watchdogs and start biting if you intrude into their territory).

Ahova vagy a dzsungelen keresztül lehet átbattyogni, vagy pedig taxi-csónakkal átszáguldani. Van itt minden, ami szem-szájnak ingere: puha fehér homok, türkizkék víz, óriásköveken napozó ijedős rákok, rája, amire én majdnem rá(ja)léptem, úgyhogy csak óvatosan a vízben sétálással, és színes halak, melyek többsége barátságos, de a rózsaszínűek jó házőrző módjára harapnak, ha valaki a felségterületükre merészkedik.

2. Coral View // Korall Kilátó

This corner of the island was very close to our accommodation and we noticed that on one side it’s bounded by a long and beautiful shore full of corals. We admired this spot only from the outside, because after an unsuccessful trial we realised that getting into the water without snorkelling shoes is very painful and you’ll end up making people laugh at you.

Azaz a szállásunk közelében található szigetcsücsök, melyet egyik oldalról egy hosszú, korallokkal teli, gyönyörű partszakasz szegélyez. Mi ezt leginkább csak csodáltuk, mert egy szerencsétlen póbálkozás során rá kellett jönnük, hogy műanyag védőcipő nélkül ide igencsak fájdalmas és egyben vicces látvány bemászni.

The other side of Coral View is bounded by a very bare white-sand beach. Because this area is constantly in the sun and the sand is extremely hot, we named it Inferno Beach. Obviously, no one ever sat there, and people were wearing flip-flops and covered themselves with towels while passing through.

A szigetcsücsök másik oldalán egy fehér homokos és teljesen kopár partszakasz húzódik. Mivel állandóan süti a nap, ezért a homok olyan forró, hogy mi elneveztük Pokol-partnak. Itt érthető módon soha senki nem tanyázott, aki pedig áthaladt, az is csak papucsot viselve, törölközőbe burkolózva vállalta a feladatot.

3.  PIR (Perhentian Islands Resort) Beach // PIR Strand

This beach was one of our favourites: white sand, blue sea, palm trees, shade, colourful fish and corals in the deeper areas. If you swim beyond the buoys, you’ll find yourself in the turtle spot: the turtles’ favourite place to hang out and graze in the algae. Understandably, this is one of the most popular snorkelling-trip stops as well. Boats appear regularly, which means that if you swim in from the shore and pretend that you belong to the group, you can see the turtles as many times as you wish.

Ez volt az egyik kedvencünk: fehér homok, kék tenger, pálmafák, árnyék, színes halak, a mélyebb részeken pedig korallok. Ha pedig az ember a bójákon túlúszik, akkor ott találja az algát legelésző teknősöket. Ezt sokan kihasználják, mivel a teknősnéző hajókirándulások is mind ide szállítják az embereket, így ha valaki szemfüles, beúszhat pont akkor amikor egy-egy hajó érkezik. Így olyan, mintha ő is a túra résztvevője lenne, és többször is láthatja a tekiket.

4. Turtle Beach // Teknős Part

This is the most beautiful beach we’ve ever seen. The sand is softer and whiter and the water is even more turquoise than anywhere else. No wonder the turtles prefer it for laying eggs. People can only come here by taxi-boat and they have to leave by 3pm. After this time the beach belongs exclusively to the turtles so they can do their digging business relaxed and uninterrupted.

A legszebb part amit valaha láttunk. A homok puhább és fehérebb, a víz pedig sokkal türkizkékebb mint bárhol máshol. Nem csoda, hogy a teknősök is ezt a partszakaszt választják tojáslerakás céljából. Ide taxi-csónakkal lehet átjutni, és csak délután 3ig szabad itt tanyázni. Azután mindenkinek el kell húznia a csíkot, hogy a teknősök zavartalanul folytathassák az ásatási munkálataikat.

We visited the Turtle Beach with Caroline and Arnaud, the French couple we first met at Taman Negara. It seems like we must have made similar travel plans, because later on we bumped into each other on the island as well. After climbing out from the taxi-boat, we told the driver that we would like to be picked up just before 3pm. He nodded, turned around and left us alone. We could only hope that we won’t be forgotten and left on this beach forever.

Mi ide Caroline-nal és Arnaud-dal, a Taman Negara Nemzeti Parkban megismert francia párral látogattunk el. Úgy tűnt, hogy hasonló programot sikerült szerveznünk magunknak, így a szigeten megint egymásba botlottunk. Mikor a taxicsónakból kiszálltunk, megegyeztünk sofőrünkkel, hogy értünk is jön még 3 előtt. Ő bólintott, elrobogott, mi meg ottmaradtunk az amúgy teljesen üres partszakaszon és abban reménykedtünk, hogy nem leszünk elfelejtve.

Unlike at the PIR beach, you can’t see turtles here, but you can see their trace and footprints all over the sand.

A PIR beach-el ellentétben itt nem lehet teknőst látni, viszont annál több kis- és nagyteknős lábnyom van mindenfelé a homokban.

The local Turtle Conservation Centre is hidden on a secluded corner of the beach. The main task of the volunteers working here is to constantly monitor the turtles, and to collect and place all the freshly laid eggs somewhere safe. Without the help of this centre the chances of a turtle to survive and reach adulthood (30 years) is one in a million, but thanks to their hard work one out of a thousand turtles will successfully grow up and return to this island to lay even more eggs.

A partszakasz egyik félreeső sarkában egy teknősökre specializálódott természetvédelmi központ működik. Az itt dolgozó önkéntesek feladata az, hogy árgus szemekkel figyeljék a tojást rakó teknősöket, majd azonnal begyűjtsék és védett helyre vigyék a tojásokat. A központ segítsége nélkül csak minden egymilliomodik teknős érné el a felnőttkort (ami amúgy 30 év), de így minden ezredik felnő és visszatér tojást rakni.

5. Jungle Trekking // Dzsungel Túra

The jungle in the middle of the island comes in handy when your skin is crispy and burnt by the equatorial sun and you need a refuge. It is less moist and suffocating than Taman Negara, but it’s just as dense and full of all sorts of creatures.

A sziget közepén található dzsungel kifejezetten hasznos cucc. Ide lehet bemenekülni, mikor az ember már ropogósra sült a napon. Sokkal kevésbé párás és fullasztó, mint a Taman Negara, viszont hasonlóan dús és teli van mindenféle élőlénnyel.

6. Monitor Lizards // Varánuszok

The grassy-shady area with small wooden huts behind PIR Beach is the local monitor lizard centre. We saw lots of them and they are surprisingly big. Their main activity is searching for food, which means that they are constantly foraging and digging up the thick layers of dry leaves. Whenever we got close, they stopped and looked at us petrified. After a few moments they raced away by throwing their fat and fleshy legs one after the other and wiggling their body like a snake. Most of the time they disappeared under the bushes, but occasionally they ran up the trees nearby.

A PIR Beach mögötti füves, árnyékos, házakkal teli terület számít a helyi varánusz-központnak. Rengetegen vannak és meglepően nagyok. Legfőbb foglalkozásuk a táplálékkeresés, vagyis folyamatosan turkálnak és ásnak a száraz levelek között. Valahányszor közelebb merészkedtünk, felkapták a fejüket, kővé dermedve jól megnéztek maguknak, majd húsos lábaikat egyiket a másik elé dobálva, testükkel kígyózva, eszeveszetten elnyargaltak. Általában a bokrok sűrűjében tűntek el, de olyan is előfordult, hogy a fákra futottak fel.

7. Flying Lemurs // Repülőmakik

Another creature living on these islands is the flying lemur (the locals call them colugo), but we didn’t know about its presence in advance. On our first evening we were unsuspectingly exploring the area. I have to admit, spotting a big furry creature gliding silently from one tree to the other took us by surprise. The lemur landed on the trunk of a big palm tree before lifting its bottom part – rather like a woman who would lift her skirt before relieving herself. The girl chilling in the hammock under the tree noticed this and jumped out just in time in order to avoid the lemur-poo that was about to splash on her head. Because we were standing nearby very surprised and interested, she came over to us and she started showing lemur pictures taken earlier on her phone. I noticed straight away the Hungarian menu on the photo app: this is how we met Bea, and her husband Laci.

A sziget tele van repülőmakikkal (a helyiek colugo-nak hívják őket), de nekünk erről fogalmunk sem volt, így első este, mikor gyanútlanul sétálva észrevettünk egy méretes és szőrös jószágot amint egyik fáról a másikra siklóernyőzik át, igencsak meglepődtünk. Az állat egy magas pálmafa törzsén landolt, majd a farok részét úgy csapta fel a hátára, mint a falusi asszonyok a rokolyát, mielőtt könnyítenének magukon. Ezt persze a fa alatti függőágyban pihenő lány is észrevette, és azonnal felpattant, hogy ne a fején landoljon a makikaki. Mivel mi nagyon érdeklődve és csodálkozva ácsorogtunk a közelben, odajött hozzánk és telefonján korábban készült fotókat kezdett mutogatni a jószágról. Persze egyből kiszúrtam a magyar menüt a fénykép-applikáción: így ismertük meg Beát és férjét, Lacit.

The flying lemurs are very quiet, discreet, nocturnal animals. During the day they tend to sleep on the trunks of the trees and they only start moving around after sunset.

A repülőmakik nagyon visszahúzódó, éjszakai állatok. Nap közben általában valamelyik fa törzsén pihennek, és csak alkonyatkor kezdenek el jönni-menni.

After our first lemur-encounter we always walked around very vigilant and tried to spot them as many times as we could. One evening a lemur decided to land on a tree right next to us and it was relaxing literally within our reach. This is how we managed to inspect each other up-close.

Az első találkozás után állandóan nyitott szemmel jártunk, és igyekeztünk minél többször rájuk bukkanni. Egyik este, egészen meglepetésszerűen, egy maki pont a mellettünk levő fán landolt és karnyújtásnyira üldögélt tőlünk. Ekkor sikerült testközelből is megszemlélnünk egymást.

8. Dusky Leaf Monkeys // Álarcos langúrok

These black monkeys with white eyeliner are often more naughty than the macaques in Taman Negara. During the day they tend to chill somewhere in the jungle in order to be perfectly relaxed and recharged for the late-afternoon events. These consist of jumping around the roofs and terraces of the little huts, stealing everything edible, and peeing and pooing everywhere. Make sure you don’t leave anything outside if you want to have it back without stains!

Ezek a fehér szemhéjtussal ellátott fekete majmok még a makákóknál is rosszabbak. Nap közben általában a dzsungelben pihennek és a délutáni programra készülnek, amikoris háztetőről háztetőre és erkélyről erkélye ugrálva végigjárják az üdülők házikóit, ellopnak minden ehetőt és ajándékképpen odavizelnek/potyogtatnak szinte mindehova. Szóval ne hagyjatok kint semmit száradni, mert rossz vége lesz!

9. Squirrels // Mókusok

There are lots of brown squirrels with red bellies all around the island. They don’t tend to get very close to people, but they are very curious and follow you on the trees next to the walkways.

Akad itt egy csomó pirospocakos barna mókus, akik nem jönnek közel, de az ágakon ugrálva kíváncsian követnek mindenhova.

10. Bats // Denevérek

If you look around very carefully, you’ll have a chance to spot some fruit bats. I’ve only seen them at the Durrell Zoo before. They spend the day by sleeping on the furthest branches of the tallest trees, but occasionally they tend to wake up and have loud arguments. When it gets dark, they circle around the shore in order to find dinner (or breakfast?).

Ha az ember szemfüles, rengeteg óriási gyümölcsdenevért is láthat. Én ilyenekkel csak a Durrell állatkertben találkoztam még Jersey szigetén. Nap közben a nagyon magas fák ágairól lógnak, és néha hangosan veszekednek. Esténként aztán a part körül köröznek és vacsorát (vagy reggelit?) vadásznak.

Besides the fruit bats we saw some smaller bats as well. I don’t know what their exact species is, but they each had a grumpy face.

11. Snorkeling // Könnyűbúvárkodás

The island is an ideal location for snorkeling. You can choose any random beach and you’ll most certainly see lots of colourful corals and interesting looking fish. Additionally, you can also book several different snorkeling trips. We chose one with four different destinations during which we visited some more distant shores, saw bigger corals and had a chance to observe the turtles and the sharks.
