Every time autumn starts to kick in and the trees become colourful I instantly feel the urge to go out and take some photos. OK, this isn’t completely true. I am constantly suffering because of this shooting urge, which makes me fall behind with the post-processing work. But I can’t help it: I’d much rather explore the outside world than spend hours sitting next to Photoshop.

Valahányszor eljön az ősz, és színesek lesznek a falevelek, az ember lányának azonnal fotózhatnékja támad. Najó, ez így túlzás. Az ember lányának állandóan fotózhatnékja van, és emiatt torlódik föl a rengeteg utómunka, mivel szívesebben mászkál odakint, ahelyett hogy a Photoshop mellett gubbasztana.

So this year, when everything started to be very red and orange, Will had this idea to grab a car and find some kind of woodland. I entrusted him with the task of choosing a location, after all he is English, hence he must know the good places. He did an awesome job picking Westonbirt Arboretum, which is a 600 acre woodland containing 18000 different tree specimens, and it is located in Cotswolds. Because each tree type reacts to the change of seasons in a very unique way, visitors have a chance to encounter hundreds of different shades of autumn.

No de idén, mikor már minden nagyon piros és narancssárga lett, Willnek az az ötlete támadt, hogy pattanjunk autóba, és keressünk valami jó sűrű fás területet. Én rábíztam a dolgot, mert hát mégiscsak ő a helyi, biztosan tudja merre érdemes elindulni. Azt kell hogy mondjam, le az összes kalapokkal előtte. Választása a Westonbirt Arborétumra esett. Ez a közel 250 hektárnyi terület a Cotswoldsban található és 18000 fa fajtának nyújt otthont. Mivel minden fa másképp reagál az ősz beköszöntére, az ide látogató népek a színskála többszáz különböző árnyalatával találják szembe magukat.

Because it’s a three-hour long drive from London to Westonbirt Arboretum, we left really early, picked Iza and Stefano up, then stepped on the gas feeling very excited and equipped with lots of cameras and lenses. When leaves start to turn colourful, you only usually have two to three weekends available to visit a woodland and enjoy the view before the leaves start to fall and die. The length of this period depends on the weather conditions as well. This seems to be a well-known fact, because as we approached the entrance we found ourselves in a big car-queue, and there was a whole army of employees whose task was to guide the cars towards a massive temporary parking area in the fields. They were extremely strict about the allocated parking spots, and had a grumpy face if you passed the invisible lines even by a few inches. I took the below picture in the afternoon when half of the cars had already left, but it still gives you a good idea about the system.

A Westonbirt Arborétum Londontól kb. 3 órányira van autóval, így jó korán elindultunk. Út közben felszedtük Izat és Stefanot, és izgatottan (no meg rengeteg fotóapparáttal felszerelkezve) száguldottunk az autópályán a cél felé. Amikor egyébként szinesedni kezdenek a falevelek, olyankor – természetesen ez az időjárástól is függ – kb. két vagy három hétvégéje van az embernek efféle fényképeznivaló helyet találni. Ezt valószínűleg rengetegen tudják, ugyanis komoly kocsisor alakult ki a park bejárata közelében, és az alkalmazottak egész hadserege segédkezett abban, hogy az autókat egy hatalmas füves területen kialakított ideiglenes parkolóba irányítsák. De nem is akárhogy! Pontosan megmondták, hogy hova állhatsz be, mennyi helyet hagyhatsz magad körül, és ha ezt akár tíz centivel is meghaladtad, akkor összevont szemöldökkel integettek, hogy ejnye-bejnye. Az alábbi kép délután készült, mikor az autók fele már elhúzta a csíkot, de azért jól látható a rendszer.

The arboretum is open every day from 9 to 5, and you have to pay £9 per person to enter. Together with the tickets everyone receives a map, which helps visitors to explore this huge area in a very systematic and efficient way. To be honest, I am not a huge tree expert. I can recognise the very basic specimens such as pine, thuja, chestnut, oak or linden, and that’s kind of it really. And despite the fact that every single tree was labelled, I don’t think I managed to learn more about them. It was a bit similar to my fine-dining restaurant experience, where I had to admit that I don’t understand the menu, but after spending some time trying to translate all the ingredients, I realised that I have never heard of any of them in Hungarian either. This is why I decided to just enjoy the fresh air, the sunshine, and the beautiful colours. Let’s see some photos of the trees… and the monkeys. It was so funny, because all this messing around with the action cameras and selfies made two older ladies stop and ask us whether we would like to have a proper group photo so we can put those sticks away. Haha.

Az arborétum egyébként minden nap 9től 5ig van nyitva, és 9 font/koponya a felnőttjegy ára. A jegyekkel együtt egy-egy térképet is a látogatók kezébe nyomnak, ami alapján aztán szisztematikusan végig lehet járni ezt a hatalmas területet. Bevallom őszintén, nem konyítok túlságosan a fákhoz. Valahogy így a fenyőfa, tuja, gesztenyefa, tölgyfa és hársfa után komplett megáll a tudomány, és annak ellenére hogy itt minden fel van címkézve, ezúttal sem lettem okosabb. Hasonló érzés volt, mint mikor egy fine dining étteremben üldögélve azon bánkódtam, hogy nem értem az étlapot, aztán mikor mindent kiszótáraztam, megállapítottam, hogy magyarul sem jobb a helyzet, ugyanis életemben nem hallottam még azokról a hozzávalókról. Na szóval ez volt most a fákkal is, úgyhogy inkább csak élveztem a friss levegőt, a napsütést, és a színes lombkoronákat. Következzenek hát a képek a fákról, na meg a majmokról. Egyébként addig bohóckodtunk a fotózkodással, amíg két idős néni meg nem kérdezte, hogy készítsenek-e rólunk egy rendes képet, és akkor abbahagyhatjuk végre a botokkal való hadonászást. Ennyi.

By the time we got back to the car it started to be quite dark, but it wasn’t late enough for us to return to London straight away. We decided to do a quick detour and visit Tetbury, a beautiful little town nearby. I don’t think there are many other places that are as English as this one. If you’ve seen the show Midsomer Murders, and you remember the locations from it, you’ll know exactly what I’m talking about. Of course, everything was already closed, so we ended up having another place added to our “we’ll come back here” list.

Már sötétedett mikor visszaértünk az autóhoz, viszont nem volt még annyira késő, hogy hazainduljunk. Úgy döntöttünk, hogy megállunk egy kis időre a közelben található Tetbury nevű városkában. Gyönyörű hely, és annyira angol, hogy ennél angolabb már nem is lehetne. Olyasmi, mint amilyet a sorozatkedvelő népek a Kisvárosi Gyilkosságokból ismerhetnek. Persze már minden zárva volt, úgyhogy erről a helyről is megállapítottuk, hogy eljövünk majd még egyszer.

By now the trees have lost all their colourful leaves completely, but if you enjoy these autumn walks, I’d suggest to check Westonbirt Arboretum out next year. It’s a breathtaking place.
