The next morning we felt rested and hungry, so we headed towards the city centre. The plan was that we will start exploring the area by following the stars on my map, and we’ll have breakfast when we bump into a cafe we both find appealing enough.

Másnap reggel kipihenten, és kissé korgó gyomorral vágtunk neki a belváros felfedezésének. Az volt a terv, hogy elkezdjük végigjárni a végigjárnivaló érdekességeket, és ha közben szimpatikus reggelizőhelyre bukkanunk, akkor ott letelepszünk.

Initially we couldn’t move as fast as my empty stomach would have wanted to, because Will kept stopping to admire the Copenhagen bicycles. I mean, not the ones that people own and randomly park all over the place, but the ones that belong to the city and for a certain amount of money anyone can rent them. The most enviable feature they have compared to the London Boris bikes is the built-in, tablet size screen, which shows the map and other useful information for the passenger in need.

A haladást egészen megnehezítette az, hogy Will mindegyre megállt a koppenhágai bicikliket csodálni. Mármint nem az emberek saját, éppen valahova odaparkolt járműveit, hanem a hivatalos városi változatot, ami némi váltságdíj ellenében elköthető egy időre. Ezekben az a leginkább irigylésre méltó a londoni biciklikhez képest, hogy mindegyik egy beépített, tablet méretű képernyővel rendelkezik, ami térképpel, meg egyéb hasznos információval látja el a rászoruló, esetleg éppen késésben levő utasát.

We both have a very curious personality, and the direct consequence of this is that if we see an open door or gate, and something interesting and worth taking a photo of behind it, we enter without hesitation. Until now we never had any problems or conflicts because of our adventurousness, but we always left with cool experiences and awesome pictures. It wasn’t any different, when we passed the main building of the Københavns Universitet, of which back then we didn’t actually know what it was, but it had a very peaceful and inviting courtyard, so we sneaked in. I don’t know whether it was winter break or people were just simply in the middle of their morning class, but no one was around us. When later on I read about this university, I learned that it was founded in 1479, which makes it the oldest university of Denmark, and the second oldest university in Scandinavia. Oh, and besides many other famous people, Niels Bohr studied here as well.

Egyébként mindketten kíváncsi természetű emberek vagyunk, ami azt eredményezi, hogy ha meglátunk egy nyitott kaput, és odabent valami fotóznivalót vagy érdekesnek tűnő dolgot, hát mi biza bemegyünk. Eddig még soha nem adódott ebből semmiféle probléma vagy konfliktus, viszont annál több élmény meg jó fénykép. Így volt ez akkor is, amikor elsétáltunk a Københavns Universitet főépülete előtt, amiről akkor még nem tudtuk, hogy egyetem, viszont a belső udvar nagyon hívogató volt, úgyhogy besettenkedtünk. Nem tudom, hogy éppen téli szünet lehetett-e vagy csak épp mindenhol órák voltak, de egy árva lélek sem volt körülöttünk, így aztán békésen tudtunk bámészkodni. Mikor később utánaolvastam, megtudtam, hogy ezt az egyetemet 1479ben alapították, így aztán Dánia legrégebbi, illetve Skandinávia második legrégebbi felsőoktatási intézményének számít. Ja meg sok más híres ember mellett Niels Bohr is itt tanult.

After we left the university building, we bumped into Kaffix, a very friendly-looking and – compared to Copenhagen prices – quite cheap cafe. An older man was the only member of staff who, besides serving the customers, also had a chat with everyone. This made me think that he must be the owner of the place, and he knows that the key to a successful business is good relationship with your regulars. We chose to sit in with our coffee and sandwich in order to warm up a bit (I don’t think I emphasised enough the fact, that in February it can be extremely cold) and also to enjoy our time-lapse video obsession.

Az egyetem épületét elhagyva belebotlottunk egy nagyon szimpatikusnak tűnő, és a koppenhágai árakhoz viszonyítva meglehetősen olcsó kávézóba, amit úgy hívnak, hogy Kaffix. Egy nagyon kedves bácsi látta el az ide betévedő népeket reggelivel, és mindenkivel beszélgetett is egy kicsit. A látottak alapján arra a következtetésre jutottam, hogy ő lehet itt a tulajdonos, aki tisztában van vele, hogy a sikeres üzlet titka a vendégekkel kialakított jó viszony. Úgy döntöttük, hogy nem elvitelre kérjük a kávé-szendvics kombót, hanem inkább beülünk felmelegedni (úgy hiszem, nem mondtam még elégszer, hogy februárban valami átkozott hideg tud lenni, ha akar) és kiélni a time-lapse videó mániánkat.

After we got bored of these people moving like in the Chaplin films, we got going. Our next stop was the Rundetaarn, which is a round tower built in the 17th century as an astronomical observatory, but nowadays it is mainly used as a very popular viewpoint of the city. The most interesting feature of this tower is that instead of the usual spiral staircase it has an equestrian staircase, which is a helical corridor leading all the way to the top. This way horses could be used in order to transport heavy things up and down. The tower is attached to the Trinitatis church, and the Library Hall located above the church is only accessible via the tower. This hall is a very active cultural venue, hosting both exhibitions and concerts.

Miután meguntuk, hogy az emberek úgy mozognak mint a Chaplin filmekben, továbbálltunk. A következő állomásunk a Rundetaarn, vagyis a kerek torony volt, amit annó, a 17. században obszervatóriumnak építettek, manapság viszont leginkább csak kilátóként üzemel. A torony érdekessége, hogy a hagyományos csigalépcső helyett egy spirális lejtő vezet fel egészen a torony tetejéig. Ezt angolul lovas lépcsőháznak is hívják, mivel hogy az épületen belül lovak segítségével szállítottak nehezebb cuccokat fel meg le. A torony egyébként szorosan hozzá van építve a Trinitatis templomhoz, és a templom fölött található csarnokba is innen lehet bejutni. Ezt a csarnokot gyakran használják különböző kiállítások, illetve koncertek lebonyolítására.

When we realised that the Changing of the Guard ceremony starts at 12pm at Amalienborg Slot, we got off the top of the round tower very quickly. The Guard leave Rosenborg Castle every day at 11:30, and they arrive to Amalienborg at 12:00 in order to replace the tired colleagues. We got there a bit earlier, so we had some time to look around and to strategically position ourselves in order to see the ceremony instead of the nape of some strangers. Amalienborg Castle is the winter residence of the Danish royal family, and it consists of four, almost identical buildings, that surround an octagonal courtyard. In the centre of the square is an equestrian statue of King Frederick V, the founder of Amalienborg.

Közben észbekaptunk, hogy az őrségváltás 12kor kezdődik az Amalienborg palotánál, úgyhogy gyorsan tovább is álltunk. Az őrség minden nap 11:30kor indul el a Rosenborg palotától, és 12re ér át az Amalienborg palotához, ahol aztán leváltják a már fáradt bajtársakat. Mi kicsit hamarabb értünk oda, így volt időnk nézelődni, no meg stratégiát kidolgozni a többi turistához viszonyított pozíciónkkal kapcsolatban, ugyanis a ceremóniát az idegenek tarkójánál sokkal érdekesebbnek tartottuk. Amalienborg egyébként a dán királyi család téli rezidenciája, négy – szinte teljesen egyforma – épületből áll, melyek egy nyolcszögű teret vesznek körül. A tér közepén Amalienborg alapítójának, V. Frigyes királynak a lovasszobra áll.

Speaking of King Frederick, Frederiks Kirke is another church worth checking out. It is right next to Amalienborg Slot, and its foundation stone was set in 1749 by… guess who… King Frederick V, of course. The church has a dome with a span of 31m held by 12 columns, which makes it the largest church dome in Scandinavia. The whole building looks very similar to St. Peter’s Basilica in Rome. Unfortunately, it was closed when we were there, so we could only check it out from the outside.

És ha már Frigyes királyról esett szó, akkor érdemes megemlíteni a Frederiks Kirket is, ami közvetlenül a palota mellett található, és aminek ugyanez a Frigyes király helyezte le az alapkövét 1749ben. A templom 31 méter átmérőjű kupoláját 12 oszlop tartja, így elméletileg ez a legnagyobb kupola Skandináviában. Amúgy egészen úgy néz ki, mint a római Szent Péter Bazilika. Sajnos épp zárva volt, mikor mi arra jártunk, így csak kívülről tudtuk meglesni.

We started to feel very hungry, so we headed towards a nearby shop called Føtex in order to try and find something edible. Like responsible grownups, we planned to check the grownup-food section out, but we accidentally bumped into a sweets-wall, a supermarket feature which is very popular in the Nordic countries. That was the moment when we gave up on the grownup-food. The self service tills of the shop must have been inspired by the English Sainsbury’s, because the same woman, with the same intonation was saying the same things, except from the very end. She didn’t say “Thank you for using Sainsbury’s self checkout”.

Közben nagyon megéheztünk, úgyhogy a közelben levő Føtex boltot céloztuk be táplálékszerzés céljából. Mint minden rendes felnőtt, először a felnőtteknek való kajarészleget környékeztük meg, de közben belebotlottunk a skandináv országokban nagy népszerűségnek örvendő édességfalba, úgyhogy végül lemondtunk a felnőttkajáról. Az önkiszolgáló pénztárgépek angol párbeszédét ez a bolt valószínűleg az angol Sainsbury’s-től nyúlhatta le, mert ugyanaz a néni, ugyanolyan hanglejtéssel, ugyanazt a dumát nyomta, azt az egyet leszámítva, hogy a végén nem mondta, hogy “Thank you for using Sainsbury’s self checkout”.

After all the sour gummy-snakes and their friends were gone, we chose to continue our journey by visiting the statue of the Little Mermaid. While walking towards it, we passed St. Alban’s Church, which – as you would already suspect – is an Anglican church, and it was built in the 19th century, when the English population in Copenhagen has grown significantly.

Miután elfogyasztottuk a savanyú gumikígyókat meg a többi borzalmat, a kis hableány szobra felé indultunk. Közben elhaladtunk a St. Alban’s templom mellett, ami – mint az már sejthető a neve alapján – egy anglikán templom, és azért épült, mert a 19. században jelentősen megnőtt a brit származású lakosság létszáma.

A few minutes later we reached the statue of the Little Mermaid, which – for some weird reason – forces all the tourists visiting it to pose in front of it in the exact same position. It’s almost like the Leaning Tower of Pisa. The sun was very bright, so we decided to act like reptiles and sunbathe on the warm stones of the shore for a while. This gave us another perfect opportunity to play with the time-lapse app of our phones.

Nem sokkal ezután rábukkantunk a kis hableányra is, aminek a látványa komoly pózolásra készteti az arra tévedő turistákat. Majdnem olyan, mint a pisai ferde torony. Mivel erősen sütött a nap, úgy döntöttünk, hogy letelepszünk, és hüllőkhöz hasonlóan mi is napozunk kicsit a felmelegedett vízparti köveken. Ez persze tökéletes alkalmat adott egy újabb timlapse videó készítésére.

I then had this idea to sit on a stone in the exact same position as the Little Mermaid. Aside from my boots, scarf, and winter jacket, I think I did a pretty good job copying the posture. The only thing I forgot to consider was the fact, that every time a tour boat approached the statue, it generated some strong waves on the otherwise very calm water surface. These waves, when they reached the shore, well… they kind of met my bottom part. And that’s how I got wet.

Aztán gondoltam egyet, és a kis hableányhoz hasonlóan én is rátelepedtem egy kőre, és a bakancsot, sálat és télikabátot leszámítva sikerült egészen jól leutánoznom a pozícióját. Csak azzal az eggyel nem számoltam, hogy a közelben elhaladó turistahajó hullámokat fog kelteni az amúgy nyugodt vízfelszínen, a hullámok pedig partot érve egyenesen a hátsó részemmel fognak találkozni. Így lett vizes a fenekem.

The Kastellet is right next to the Little Mermaid statue, and it is considered to be one of the best preserved star fortresses in Northern Europe. It has the shape of a pentagram, and it is surrounded by water, which gives home to hundreds of happy ducks. Within the walls of the fortress there are several different types of buildings, such as military base, church, prison, and – our favourite – a windmill. Oh, and even though I couldn’t see any signs that warn the visitors about not being allowed to walk on the grass, people here don’t seem to like it if someone deviates from the walkways. We obviously had to explore all the hidden corners of the fortress, which made one of the wardens telling us off. Conclusion: if you visit Kastellet, make sure you stick to the walkways.

A Kastellet közvetlenül a kis hableány szobra mellett található. Ez Észak-Európa egyik legjobb állapotban fennmaradt erődítménye. Körvonala ötágú csillag alakú, és minden irányból víz veszi körül, melyben kacsák százai úszkálnak békésen. Az erődítmény falain belül többféle épület is helyet kapott: katonai bázis, templom, börtön, és – ami a legjobban tetszett mindkettőnknek – egy szélmalom. Egyébként sehol nincs kitéve ugyan, de nem szeretik ha az ember letér a sétányokról és a füvön mászkál. Mi megjártuk, mert valami helyi gondnok bácsi elég csúnyán ránkszólt, hogy tűnjünk el a fűről, de azonnal. Szóval ha arra jártok, ne mászkáljatok le a sétányokról!

When we finally left Kastellet behind, we realised we wouldn’t mind finding a toilet somewhere. Right at the moment we expressed this desire, we noticed a building under renovation. There was a huge pile of old furniture in front of it, waiting for being transported away. One of the items in this pile was a toilet bowl. When we finally managed to avoid the death caused by choking with laughter, we came to the conclusion, that people in this city should be very careful with the way they formulate their wishes. This is how we found the place called Tranquebar, which is a bookstore-cafe. And now here’s the secret: if you pass the shelves and walk all the way to the farthest corner of the shop, you’ll find a toilet. We used it without batting an eyelid, and no one came after us to check whether we consumed something.

A Kastelletet elhagyva megfogalmazódott bennünk, hogy de jó lenne egy wct találni. Még ki sem mondtuk, és abban a pillanatban szembejött egy épp felújítás alatt álló épület, ami elé kidobálták a régi, elszállításra váró berendezést, többek között egy wc csészét is. Miután sikerült kilábalni a fulladásos röhögésből, megállapítottuk, hogy ebben a városban jobb ha az ember óvatosan és alaposan megfogalmazva kíván dolgokat. Így jutottunk el a Tranquebar nevű kávézó-könyvesbolthoz. És akkor most megsúgom, hogy ha az ember szépen átvág a könyvespolcok között a boltnak egészen a leghátsó sarkába, na ott lesz egy mosdó amit mi szemrebbenés nélkül használtunk, és senki nem koslatott utánunk, hogy ellenőrizze, fogyasztottunk-e bármit is.

Once relieved, we headed towards Rosenborg Slot. I think, this was the moment we started to feel a little bit confused around this whole castle/fortress topic, because we realised that this city has not one, not two, but four buildings with similar significance. Up until 1710 Rosenborg castle was the main royal residence, after which I think they must have started to find this castle-abundance situation confusing as well, and from that point they only used Rosenborg in case of emergencies. Currently the castle is a state property, and houses a museum, which is open to the public all year round. We didn’t go in, because let’s be honest, a long weekend is not enough to explore a city both outside and inside. However, we managed to find the statue of Hans Christian Andersen in the castle park.

Innen a Rosenborg kastélyt vettük célba. Ez volt az a pont, amikor kezdtünk összezavarodni kastély meg erődítmény szempontból, ugyanis azzal szembesültünk, hogy ennek a városnak nem egy, nem is kettő, hanem legalább négy ehhez hasonló jelentőségű épülete van. 1710ig a Rosenborg kastély volt a királyi rezidencia, aztán pedig úgy tűnik ők is a bőség zavarában kezdtek szenvedni, és attól fogva ezt az épületet csak vészhelyzet esetén használták. Ma már az állam tulajdona, múzeumként működik, és egész évben látogatható. Mi ezt kihagytuk, mert lássuk be, egy hosszú hétvége alatt semmi esély mindent megnézni belülről is. A kastélykertben viszont megtaláltuk Hans Christian Andersen szobrát.

We started to feel hungry again, but this time we seriously needed some grownup-food. I remembered, that the day before I saw a truck called Toni’s Lángos, selling lángos, which is Hungarian deep fried flatbread. For some reason I really wanted to try it. It should have been very suspicious, when the lady selling the lángos couldn’t answer in Hungarian, but since we were already there, we couldn’t give up on trying it. Well, if you know how a real lángos should taste, and you want to avoid disappointment, then don’t eat here! Tony’s lángos was small, dry, and they seemed to want to save money even on the sour cream.

Lassan kezdtünk megéhezni, és gyomrunk ezúttal valamiféle felnőttkaja után sóvárgott. Eszembe jutott, hogy előző nap láttam egy Toni’s Lángos néven futó sarki bódét, és szerettem volna kipróbálni. Már akkor gyanút kellett volna fognom, mikor a bódéban álldogáló néni nem tudott magyarul, de ha már ott voltunk, nem hagyhattuk csak úgy ott. Na és akkor most megspórolnék minden kedves olvasónak egy csalódást. Ne próbáljátok ki! A lángos itt kicsi, száraz, és még azt a szerencsétlen tejfölt is nagyon fösvényen kenegetik a tetejére.

Since the previous evening I couldn’t get the thought of recording a sunset time-lapse in Nyhavn out of my mind, and I kept telling this to Will. We realised, that now our never, so after food we headed towards the canal. It turned out to be a much better idea in theory than in practice, because none of us gave some thought to the fact that a sunset in February will last for about an hour and a half. We froze to the side of the road, but I am quite happy with the result.

Közben már legalább 24 órája mondogattam Willnek, hogy szeretnék Nyhavnben egy naplementés-sötétedéses timleapse videót készíteni. Úgy éreztük, hogy most vagy soha, így aztán visszaindultunk a csatorna felé. Az efféle elképzelések valahogy mindig jobb ötletnek tűnnek elméletben, de arra egyikünk sem gondolt, hogy a naplemente legalább másfél órát fog tartani. Odafagytunk. De úgy nagyon. Viszont az eredmény egészen jó lett.

By the time the last street light was turned on, I couldn’t feel my limbs, and the battery of my phone died, our only thought was to find a random pub next to the canal, no matter how expensive their beer is. I have no idea which was the one we ended up choosing, because I wasn’t paying attention when we entered, and by the time we left, we were, well… more than tipsy, that’s for sure. The only thing I remember is that the place was a tiny Danish pub, where a British girl from Oxford was serving the different types (unfiltered, dark, dark unfiltered…) of Carlsberg. Later on a middle aged, more-than-tipsy Norwegian couple joined us, and despite the fact that they knew almost no English, we quickly made friends with them. They told us, that they are coming to Copenhagen all the time, when they fancy a bit of drinking and partying, because in Norway these are very expensive activities. They also told us about the family trip they are organising next year, and it came as a surprise when they invited us as well to join them. They gave us their phone numbers and email addresses, and they made us promise that we will contact them. I don’t really remember anything else from that evening, apart from when we were already on our way back to the hotel in the middle of the night, it was freezing cold, and Will was holding a pizza box, because apparently we thought we will try to save the situation by having some food before going to bed. We never contacted the Norwegian couple. I don’t think they remembered us the following day…

Mikor a legutolsó lámpa is kigyúlt, az összes végtagunk lefagyott, és a telefonom is lemerült, az volt a legelső gondolatunk, hogy beülünk egy random kocsmába a csatorna mentén, és nem fog érdekelni, hogy mennyibe kerül a sör. Azt már meg nem mondom hol voltunk, mert az este egy enyhe filmszakadással végződött, de a lényeg, hogy egy picike dán kocsában kötöttünk ki, ahol egy angol diáklány fáradhatatlanul csapolta nekünk a szűretlen meg barna Calrsberget. Aztán megjelent egy középkorú, norvég, illuminált állapotban levő házaspár, akikkel annak ellenére hogy szinte egyáltalán nem tudtak angolul, azonnal összebarákoztunk. Kiderült, hogy ők mindig Koppenhágába járnak inni meg bulizni, mert Norvégiában ez nagyon drága mulatság. Kicsivel később már a következő évi családi kirándulásuk terveiről meséltek, ahova minket is meghívtak. Megadták a telefonszámukat és email címüket, és a lelkünkre kötötték, hogy keressük meg őket. Az este további részére már csak nagyon homályosan emlékszem. Valamikor sikerült továbbállni a kocsmából, és az éjszaka közepén, dermesztő hidegben kutyagoltunk hazafele. Will egy pizzásdobozt tartott a kezében, amiből menet közben toltuk befele a pizzaszeleteket, hogy mentsük ami menthető. A norvég házaspárt azóta sem kerestük meg. Szerintem másnap egyáltalán nem emlékeztek ránk…
