After the climb to Kala Patthar, we left our lodge at Gorekshep and trekked back to Lobuche. The plan was to trek westward to the Cho La leaving the Everest Base Camp Trail. From here began the second phase of the trek.
We reached Lobuche which was a quick 2 hour walk from Gorekshep. Our Sherpas asked us if we wanted to continue for another 3-4 hours to Dzongla or stay at Lobuche for the night and move the next day. While this was doable we took the option to stay in Lobuche overnight, take rest and condition our bodies for Cho La. We decided to take this one nice and slow and be better prepared with altitude. You could imagine even after 2 weeks of trekking the human body was having difficulties coping up with the altitude.
The next day, we bid goodbye to Lobuche one last time and continued the Trail west towards the village of Dzongla as planned before. The route faded out from the main Everest Base Camp trail which goes to Periche and traces back to Dingboche. While we took the scenic route through the Lobuche East base camp. The trail narrows and one small misstep and it is a sheer drop to the valley below. We saw some vegetation again and even yaks grazing the meadows at some places. Ragged granite mountain peaks of Mt Taboche and Mt. Cholatse towered over us and within a few hours, we reached Dzongla.
This was arguably the best village on the trek and without doubt, hands down had the best views of all the villages we passed through the entire trek. Dzongla was a small fairy-tale village with something like 2-3 lodges. The evening was covered in mist and the village was snowed in overnight.
