A Throwback to Fort Kochi

I grew up in Kochi in the little State of Kerala in South India for the first ten years of my life. In the city of Kochi lies a small suburb called Fort Cochin or Fort Kochi. I proudly call this my hometown and the time I spent here is forever imprinted in my memories.

The port city of Fort Kochi, a major trading hub from time immemorial. It was the melting pot of many cultures throughout the centuries and brought the Arabs, the Jews, the Chinese, the Europeans in search of wealth and money. Some even went on and settled down here and co-existed together. The varied interests of all these people and their cultural exchanges have left the city peppered with a heritage that is still sought after by tourists and travellers from all over the globe.

In my childhood, I have had the opportunity to visit almost all of this small town’s historical places of interest at various times. But I haven’t had the chance for an extensive visit anytime in the recent past. I made a short trip to the city in July 2014 and did a quick tour of some of the spots including the promenade of Fort Kochi beach, the Chinese fishing nets, the Santa Cruz Basilica Church and made a boat trip across to Vypeen Island.

It’s been two years since that day and here’s a throwback to that visit. Although incomplete, it demands another visit sometime sooner than later.
