It was a nice excuse to reflect on both my (expat) life here, and, for lack of a better term, my ‘blogging journey’.
I guess it’s been quite a while since I’ve written an introspective post on this blog, so I haven’t given myself a proper chance to appreciate how many things have changed in the past year. Especially when I compare this interview with the my interview on Bubble Tea 101 back in July 2015, I realize how many parts of my life now are markedly different.
As I mention in my Blog Expat interview, a big instigator of those changes has been this very blog. What started off as merely a personal time capsule of sorts has become something that plays quite a significant role in my life. (This is a good time to say a huge thank you to all of you who follow and support Typing To Taipei!).
Sometimes I catch myself in disbelief about how many wonderful things Taipei has given me. I honestly feel very fortunate to have had the opportunity to figure out so many facets of my life here. I know many expats will concur that Taiwan has given them many opportunities they wouldn’t have otherwise had in their home countries or elsewhere abroad.
That’s not to say that being an expat in Taipei is all rainbows and butterflies. It can be lonely. It can be isolating at times. It can make you question yourself, what you’re doing, and what you envision for your life ahead (and sadly, some expats may face much more awful experiences like discrimination).
Expat life is complex, so it’s hard to condense it into a short and sweet sound bite. However, overall, I’d have to say it’s been an incredibly thrilling experience which has challenged me on both a personal and professional level.
And that’s something I particularly appreciate about expat life – that it’s always pushing you forward. I guess the moment it stops doing that, it might be time to move on to the next adventure.
