Yayoi Kusama & Louis Vuitton

Louis Vuitton has invited for a second time, world renowned artist Yayoi Kusama to create a new collection. Kusama, who is 93 years old and lives in Japan, has received international acclaim and exposure in the last 15 years, now making her one of the most popular artists in the world. She is known for painting and creating infinity rooms with colored dots.

The limited-edition collection at Louis Vuitton includes handbags, wallets, purses, clothing, shoes, sneakers, and other accessories, covered with Kusama’s signature dots.

I visited the flagship Louis Vuitton boutique last week (the line was surprisingly short, I only waited 15 minutes) and the outside has a massive, life-like sculpture of Kusama perched on top of the building and metal dots covering the facade. Inside, I loved the dots covering the floor and the walls, and the salespeople wore specially designed white smocks with the dots. On the second floor is a fun video installation of Kusama along with models sporting the clothes and accessories. Gourds with dots, another Kusama signature, are also referenced in the collection.

Kusama has also delved into the other arts during her long career including film, poetry, novel and short story writing, performing, and videos. She lived in New York City in the late 1950s and early 1960s and was an important figure in the Pop Art world. She also organized live happenings in the 1960s in Central Park and on the Brooklyn Bridge to protest the Vietnam War. In 1972 Kusama returned to Japan and currently still lives there.
