Boldini at Le Petit Palais

Giovanni Boldini was one of the most renowned portrait painters of the late 19th century. Born in Ferrara, Italy in 1842, he trained in Florence as an artist for six years. He later moved to London and became a successful portrait painter of society women including the Duchess of Westminster and Lady Holland. In 1872, Boldini moved to Paris, befriending fellow painter Degas and Proust, and became the premiere portrait painter of the upper class and bourgeoisie of La Belle Epoque, Paris. He became a bon-vivant among the society crowd, frequently socializing with his subjects.

The Petit Palais is having the first ever retrospective of Boldini, featuring over 150 paintings.

Walking through the exhibit last week, I was swept away to the long gone, La Belle Epoque era of beautiful countesses, baronesses, and marquises dressed in the most elegant, exquisite, and feminine gowns and dresses, romantically captured by Boldini with his delicate brush strokes. I gasped when I entered a long hall with the most breathtaking portraits gracing the walls.

This exhibit goes to the top of my must do list in Paris right now.
