After I visited Dior flagship store, I went next Door to newly opened La Galerie Dior, a museum that encapsulates the history of the Dior brand.
I was immediately smitten by the three-story high wall behind the spiral staircase containing 452 miniature dresses, gowns, and suits and over 1,400 3D printed objects including shoes, purses, hats, and perfume bottles, graduating in color from black to white to purple to red to pink.
The museum is divided into 13 galleries over three floors and traces the history of Dior, starting in 1947, when Christian Dior, designed his first collection, which became a worldwide sensation, and named the New Look by legendary editor Carmel Snow at Harper’s Bazaar. The exhibition continues with more extraordinary clothes designed by the master, until his sudden and untimely death at age 52 in 1957 and followed by five successive designers over the next seven decades including Yves Saint Laurent (who was fired in 1960, just after designing six collections, after sending motorcycle jackets, turtlenecks, and streetwear down the runway), Marc Bohan, Gianfranco Ferré, John Galliano, Raf Simons and Maria Grazia Chiuri, the current designer.
Walking through each room I was astonished by beautifully curated collection and the artful and clever presentation. Interspersed in between the 132 clothing mannequins with the most gorgeous haute couture creations are displays of the various Dior perfumes, shoes by Roger Vivier, handbags, hats, and other accessories. There’s also newsreels and films that have featured Dior plus magazine articles, documents, sketches, and photos plus Christian Dior’s original office. There’s even a café on the second floor.
