I first fell in with the enchanted and whimsical work of husband and wife Claude and François-Xavier Lalanne, when I saw an exhibition about them in 2010 at the Musee des Decoratifs.

Ironically enough, Claude has never had a solo exhibition, always displaying her work along side her husband. The highly anticipated show features 40 plus pieces representing the distinctive surrealist style of Lalanne, using humor and poetry. Each piece is exquisite, many adorned with vines and leaves in bronze or metal and a series of wall sculptures resemble ancient Greek or Roman statues.

One sculpture, Man with the Head of Chou, from 1968 was made famous by pop singer Serge Gainsbourg, who recorded a concept album with the same title.

The show runs through May 27 and on June 18, an exhibition of François-Xavier Lalanne will open.

Sadly, François-Xavier passed away in 2008.
