The long-awaited Yagan Square opened this weekend showcasing some of Western Australia’s finest local produce and of course our world-famous Azure Perth Skies. Yagan Square is the latest of a string of fantastic new Perth Developments helping to rejuvenate the City of Perth.

Situated in the heart of Perth and forming the connection between Perth and Northbridge, Yagan Square has been hailed as a “meeting place”; a place for West Australians and visitors alike to meet and experience  WA’s heritage and landscape. The Square was carefully thought out to be a place to relax and enjoy rather than a thoroughfare to walk quickly through.

Yagan Square offers a range of fantastic experiences with something to please everyone – from the Market Hall, cafes to green spaces and wildflower gardens, to a children’s play space and engaging public art.

Eating & Drinking

With 26 food vendors to choose from, you can sample some of the best Western Australian produce as well as the international fare in the Market Hall or Horseshoe Lane. From Margaret River cheeses and fresh WA seafood to Peruvian sandwiches and sizzling Japanese street food, there is something to tempt your palate.

Things To Do

Head to one of the Square’s outdoor spaces and enjoy cultural programs, digital art and light shows on the Digital Tower and canopies.  There is a beautiful green space featuring some of the original flora that would have grown in the area hundreds of years ago. The Children’s playspace is another great addition. 

Where Did The Name Come From And What Is The History Behind It?

Yagan Square is named after prominent Noongar leader Yagan (c1795-1833), and reflects the Aboriginal culture and offers an insight into Whajduk history.

The square’s unique West Australian design came from a close collaboration between architects and a Whadjuk Nyoongar advisory group and seeks to capture the essence of the region, using locally quarried stone, water features and local flora.

The 9m Wirin statue symbolising the Noongar Leader was created by Tjyllyungoo (Lance Chadd) and overlooks the precinct, whilst the 14 poles on the top of the digital tower represent the 14 dialects of the Noongar language.

Getting to Yagan Square

Yagan Square is located within the arms of the William Street Horseshoe Bridge, between Roe and Wellington streets in Perth. If you are staying in the city or Northbridge, take a lazy stroll or catch one of the city’s free cat buses. Yagan Square is right next to the city train station, so is an easy journey from Perth’s suburbs.

Look for the orange buildings or the tall Digital Tower and voila!
