A guide to earning Qantas Points with Qantas Insurance

In New Zealand there is one Qantas Insurance product, and that is Travel Insurance.

This guide is here to give you a quick overview of the policy options that allow you to earn Qantas Points.

Disclaimer

Note that nothing in this guide should be read as a recommendation for Qantas Insurance products for you. You should read their PDS in detail and assess whether the cover and associated costs are appropriate for your personal circumstances.

Our commentary is around the ability to earn Qantas Points and whether their products are easily understood. It is not easy to make general comments on whether this is a good insurance policy, so that’s not an area we’ll be touching on.

Travel Insurance

Points can be earned from Qantas Insurance by signing up to a travel insurance policy (underwritten by Lloyd’s).

1 Qantas Point per $ spent on your premium is what you will earn, although there are sometimes double points offers which are run.

You’ll earn an additional 1,000 points if you purchase an Annual Multi Trip Policy but note that no points are earned on Cancellation or Baggage cover.

This is probably (but we don’t know for sure having not compared) the same set of Travel Insurance policies that were previously available from Qantas and QBE.

You will be eligible for the points earn upon departure, but points may take up to 6 weeks from the date of your departure to be credited to your Qantas Frequent Flyer account.

Paying with points

There is an option to pay your travel insurance premium with your existing Qantas Points.

This can only be done at time of booking a flight with Qantas, and not when purchasing insurance independent of a flight booking.

You won’t receive very good points value by redeeming in this way, so skip this option when it presents itself.

Loss of Qantas Points

Under the Comprehensive and Multi Trip policies, Qantas Insurance will refund up to 1,000,000 Qantas Points for any Qantas Frequent Flyer award ticketing or rebooking penalty that you may incur as a result of any covered reason.

A flipside of this is that they (apparently) will not provide cover for points bookings made with other programmes. So it would be best to only consider these insurances where you are making a redemption with Qantas Points.

Must be booked on a Qantas flight

For the Cancellation and Baggage policies, you will only be covered for cancellation costs on flights with Qantas.

Summing up

This guide is simply here to show you that there is an ability to earn Qantas Points on travel insurance.

As far as whether these travel insurance policies are worth it – well, that’s up to you. Obviously, with something as important as insurance, people shouldn’t consider it as an option just for a few points – the coverage needs to be right for you.
