How to Sleep on the Plane

I have the hardest time falling asleep on planes and generally accept the fact that I will be reading or watching in-Flight movies the whole way. However, there are some easy ways to let sleep come naturally. Try these the next time you fly.

Position is key. Prop your feet on your carry-on bag to mimic lying down and tip the seat back, but be aware of the passengers behind you. You don't want to make any enemies on the flight. You can lean forward onto the tray table if you need to. Bring a neck pillow or use a balled up sweatshirt to rest your head on.

Dress comfortably. Wear layers and make sure to bring clean socks in case your feet get cold. Taking off your shoes will trick your brain into thinking it is bedtime, so bring shoes that will be easy to slip on and off. Athletic clothes work great because they are both comfortable and more acceptable to wear out in public than pajamas.

Wear noise canceling headphones or ear buds to block out noise from your neighbors. The White Noise App has hundreds of calming sounds for free download. You can get the app on both android and apple. I have used the app and I love it, especially the Camping in the Rain download.

Stay hydrated and eat a small meal before boarding, airplane food can cause indigestion sometimes. I have actually gotten food poisoning on a 15 hour flight before, not fun. Bring healthy snacks for long flights and avoid anything with caffeine or lots of sugar.
