Good news for all Art Lovers!
Pondicherry, the fascinating tourist destination will be having an Arts and Crafts Village at Murungapakkam. Moreover, this village offers a great opportunity for the artists to showcase and sell their handicrafts under a single roof. By doing this, the city will be improving their culture and tradition to a great level.
Spread over 4 acres, the Arts & Crafts Village has the capacity to accommodate more than 50 artisans. It is exactly placed on the banks of Chunnambar backwaters. There will be a total of 24 permanent stalls for artisans and a separate demonstration & exhibition block for display matters. Apart from this, conference hall, an open-air theatre, workshop and training centre will be placed in the village.
This Arts & Crafts Village will be the major centre for tourist activities in Pondicherry. With an estimated cost of 5.34 crore, the village is designed by Indian National Trust for Art and Cultural Heritage (INTACH) and developed by Pondicherry Tourism Development Corporation (PTDC).
Ashok Panda, the co-convener of INTACH revealed that the arts and crafts village will be functioning throughout the year. This is because the tourists get the opportunity to interact and see the handicrafts done by the artisans. All the stalls don’t have doors as to use for major handicraft exhibitions and melas.
According to the sources of Tourism Department, the Arts and Crafts Village will be a ideal destination to display a variety of crafts like handmade paper, terracotta, antiques, studio pottery, handmade goods and much more. Further, the artists from the village are likely expected to conduct a exhibition at the crafts bazaar on Promenade Beach.
