Vasai Fort A Memory.

The coastal line of Maharashtra is separated into North Konkan and Konkan from travelling point of view. Mumbai is the main island in North Konkan and to secure it, many  forts were built. Out of these forts, the Fort of Vasai is the significant one. One who ruled this fort, could govern over the encompassing districts of Mumbai, Thane, and Saashti.

Vasai fort was built with an expectation to keep a watch on the locale of Saashti. In 1737, the Marathas attempted to capture the fort, yet fizzled off. Later Bajirao Peshwa picked Chimajiappa for the mission. He planned for it and decided to attack from swamp side of the fort. The armed force broke inside thundering 'Har Har Mahadev'. Unfortunately mines burst late and many soldiers died.  The war began on 2nd May 1739 and took two days. 800 Portuguese lost their lives in the war. The ammunition ended lastly the Portuguese surrendered to Chimajiappa. Ladies and children of the enemy were permitted to go out securely with no harm.

How to Reach Vasai Fort :
One should go to Vasai. There are regular bus services  from New Vasai to Old Vasai. Buses & Auto (Sharing) from New Vasai or Vasia Station are available which takes you directly to the fort.
