With relaxed drinking laws and a penchant for a good time, it can be hard to know where to draw the line. Don’t

Stick to only Bourbon Street and the French Quarter. The eclectic and interesting neighborhoods spanning across the city each offer up something different. From exploring the timeless architecture and perfectly manicured greenery on a Garden District Tour to dancing on Frenchman Street in legendary jazz clubs, you’ll find adventure on every block.

Don’t

Carry glass bottles outside of bars. There are no open container laws, so drinking on the streets is okay, but glass is not permitted. Glass bottles are against the law due to the dangers they pose when they break, so stick with plastic containers. Most places make it easy to keep the party going by offering plastic “go-cups” for your drinks. However, remember that it’s easy to go overboard with the sweet daiquiris and “Hand Grenades,” so don’t overdo it and regret it the next morning!

Don’t

Forget to experience the history of the city. Celebrating 300 years in 2018, New Orleans is packed full of cultural attractions, historical tours, museums, and more. A plantation tour just outside the city limits will tell firsthand stories of early settlers in the area.

Do

Stay safe from pickpockets and scammers. For added safety, travelers should put money in a front pocket or jacket pocket with a zipper. Also, avoid street vendors or performers that don’t have a visible permit.

Do

Dress appropriately. It can get hot and humid down here. Even during winter months, the humidity remains constant most of the time. Pack the right clothes, and don’t forget rain gear and boots.

Visit the odd and interesting shops and local food selections. Tourists will be amazed by the nearly endless local shops on Magazine Street, and for culinary treats that aren’t found anywhere else, indulge in the seafood stops and po’boy spots on nearly every corner.
