April Fool: Through The Lens of Frogo

On the occasion of April Fools’ Day, every year there are tremendous amount of buzz surrounding the various pranks developed by many brands.

One of the most notable one was from Analog Watch Company which fooled even the Gizmodo, the famous design and technology blog. The company said it is releasing 25 pieces costing $ 27500 each. These will be made from solid piece of 4.5-billion-year-old moon rock, collected from our lunar neighbor back in 1974 by the Soviet’s Luna probe.

Now this was one prank that got the world talking.

Planning Phase of Frogo Prank Day

Back at Frogo headquarters, our team was also busy creating the best of the pranks for our beloved customers to join the celebration. Our team led by Marketing genius Vivek and the Frogo head Shalini were busy brainstorming all the possible crazy ideas we can execute. In between there were some noteworthy suggestions from support cast like Chetan, Anshu and Shourya (me). We also got some interesting ideas from Manoj Agrawal (Co-Founder) and after much dwelling we were able to list down 4 interesting plots.

These were:

  • Date With Sylvester Stallone: It was and all expense paid date with the biggest action star of our time. Couldn’t get bigger than this.

  • Spa In 100 BC Mud: We marketed it as a rare 100 BC mud spa in the Luxury spa up in the foothills of Himalayas. It was mentioned to having magical effect on the skin. A limited time offer.

  • A Moon Odyssey: Perhaps the craziest of the lot, a 7 day trip to moon. It couldn’t get crazier than this one. We made it so authentic that their very multiple bookings for the same.

  • Say Hi to Mermaids: This experience promised the customers a sight of the mystical mermaids. It promised to take them deep into the sea and get a glimpse of mermaids.

Execution Phase

Once the grand planning was done, it was the time for creating the engaging content. Our master Content Writer, Mr. Shivesh and I were up to task. The time was less and the duty was huge but we somehow managed. The poor guy Sharath, our go to designing guy was just caught hold up near the door (he was about to leave!). Together we created the best of the content; the tech team was up to the task and uploaded the entire experience on the website in no time. The codes were generated, items published and we were good to go. Forgot to mention, Mr. Frogo aka Aditya was meticulously monitoring the entire process over phone from home.

Judgment Day

Next day was big as it was the judgment day. We all were excited and nervous in the same breadth and curious to know how the pranks would play out.

Voila! We banged on the target. We got booking all the all four experiences including the Moon odyssey. I mean, Richard Branson and Elon Musk are still envisioning and here we were taking people for a 7 day moon trip. Crazy as hell would be an understatement.

The customer support team was continuously giving us update about the crazy calls and their discussion with the customers. One excited customer was near the Ananda Spa, the place where we promised offering the 100 BC mud spa.

It was tough to convince people that the codes will be delivered within 24 hours. The result exceeded our expectations and the buzz generated was tremendous.

Customer Reactions

And then, sadly we had to reveal the plot.

Customer reactions were little bit of high tone in confusion but once the prank plot was out they were little disheartened that it was actually not true. Yes, we never implied any harm emotionally or mentally but it was Aprill Fools’ Day and we couldn’t resist. Finally, we gave a gift voucher worth Rs 500 to each customer. If we unintentionally broke any of your heart please excuse us!

We actually cracked the 1st April marketing code and we were proud of our smooth execution.

I will conclude by saying that taking stuff lightly once a while is a great refresher and 1st April truly provided that break. Going ahead, we are confident of creating many more dates to infuse fun to our daily work environment.
