On March 27, 2022, International flights operation resumed in India! Around 60 airlines from 40 countries have been permitted to operate 1,783 frequencies to/from India during the summer schedule, according to The Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) and it will be effective till October 29, 2022.

Earlier on March 23, 2020, the Central government of India suspended International flight operations due to the Covid-19 pandemic and its outbreak into the country. Later in July 2020, International flights became operational under bilateral air bubble arrangements with various countries. But the ban on regular international flight operations stretched for nearly two years!

Important Details Regarding International Fights Operation Under Summer Schedule –

• Under the 2022 summer schedule, over 3,200 departures per week will be operated from India.
• According to the aviation regulator Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA), a total of 1,466 departures per week have been approved for Indian carriers, the airlines will operate to 43 destinations in 27 countries!
• 1,783 foreign airlines’ departures will also be operated per week.
• A total of 60 foreign airlines of 40 countries have been approved to operate 1783 frequencies to/from India during Summer Schedule 2022. The countries include Mauritius, Malaysia, Thailand, Turkey, the United States of America, Iraq and others.

Airlines operated departures according to the approved schedule –

• Emirates – 170 departures per week
• Oman Air – 115 departures per week
• Air Arabia – 110 departures per week
• Qatar Airways – 99 departures per week
• Gulf Air – 82 departures per week 
• Etihad Airways – 80 departures per week
• Saudi Arabian Airlines – 63 departures per week
• Kuwait Airways – 56 departures per week
• Sri Lanka Airlines – 128 departures per week
• Singapore Airlines – 65 departures per week
• British Airways – 49 departures per week
• Thai Airways – 36 departures per week
• Lufthansa German – 32 departures per week
• Malaysia Airlines – 30 departures per week
• Japan Air Lines – 22 departures per week
• Air France – 20 departures per week
• KLM Royal Dutch Airlines – 18 and departures per week
• Aeroflot Russian Airlines – 6 departures per week
• In addition, a few new airlines are also introduced such as Salam Air, Air Arabia Abu Dhabi, Qantas and American Airlines.

The Indira Gandhi International Airport (IGIA) in the national capital, expects international flight departures to witness a significant jump in the first week of April. IGIA handled around 1.8 lakh passengers per day during pre-Covid times which has dropped down in Covid years.

The government has also relaxed the Covid guidelines for international flight operations. Now, there is no requirement to keep three seats vacant, crew members do not need to wear a complete PPE kit, and so on!
