Grand Place In Brussels

La Grand place also called Grote Markt in Dutch & Great Square in English can be considered as the heart of Brussels due to Geographical & historical importance. This place has marked its imprint in history books as a symbol of pride especially to the people of Brussels thus recognized as one of the UNESCO world heritage sites. The story goes back to the year 1695 when his place was completely destroyed by the French army under the command of then ruler Louis XIV. But what happened after this is remarkable in its own terms. Rather than building the entire place in a new contemporary style, The then city magistrate ensured that this place was rebuilt exactly the way it was before the destruction happened. One of the reasons was to prove their financial stability and how powerful they were as a nation. This very same power of the traders and establishments is visible in the designs on the outer walls of the building. This is the very reason why it stayed and still stays close to the heart of the Brussels people.

Maison du Roi or the Museum of the City of Brussels:

This building was owned by the Duke of Brabant who was a ruler of the Spanish empire and the Holy Roman empire too. After the remodeling in the year 1873, the building is now been used as a museum. It holds artifacts since the 16th century and One can surely understand the history of Brussels just visiting this museum.

Hotel de Ville (Town Hall):

Constructed in the 15th Century, this building is easily the oldest one among the guilds and establishments in the square. This building is found in the southeast part of this square-shaped place. It can be easily recognized by its tall tower measuring 96 meters in height and with a statue of archangel Michael on the top of the tower. One can also take a guided tour on Tuesdays & Wednesdays in Dutch, French & English at 1.45 pm, 2.30 pm & 3.30 pm respectively. It is closed on all Mondays and on the National holidays(1st Jan, May 1st,  1st & 11th November & the Christmas )
