6 ways to spruce up romance in New Zealand

Tandem skydive

Who wants to conquer the world when you can conquer the skies and, most importantly, your fear? Unless you are one of the few who actually like jumping off high places – really high places. Fearless or not, this is an experience best had with your significant other. We insist. Jumping off a plane – yes, voluntarily – while strapped to each other, feeling the wind – literally – hit you in the face is a squeal-worthy moment. A few more altitude of descent and you can gracefully unfurl a parachute as you make way to the ground. Conquered this mean feat together, you have begun your honeymoon on all time high!

Scenic flight to White Island

We all know how Pompeii went down and there was nothing – we repeat, nothing – remotely romantic about. But, here’s a trip to watch the only permanent volcano of New Zealand. There is something remotely romantic about hovering above the New Zealand coastline though. That too, in the company of someone you absolutely adore. This flight will have you both gaping in awe at the vibrant geothermal reserves, the volcano and the Blue and Green Lakes. And, of course, the ceaseless Pacific Ocean in the backdrop. The view is better from the top. But if you want to make a splash, you could organise a floatplane to pick you up or land by various lake sites. A little off-the-beaten-path exploration? Power up and fly to the hidden Orakei Korako valley. The views and the company, are worth taking this trip for!

Rotorua mud bath

Crave a little romantic intervention while on your honeymoon? How does spa sound? No, not the fancy indoors one. Instead, head to the Rotorua outdoors and dip into the Mud Bath! Surrounded by bountiful nature – spring-fed waterfall et all, soak your tensions away at this natural spa. With the additional benefit of the mud bath easing away your joint and muscle pain if any – this alone time with your partner will have you refreshed in more than one way.   With a variety of mud baths to choose from – from Black mud to White to even Grey; choose the one that sets the right mood for you. No, this honeymoon won’t just be about dilly-dallying around with your love. Healing, exfoliating and spending some quality time are right up in the to-do list too!

Hot air ballooning over Canterbury

Catch the sunrise as you glide over the Canterbury valley? A no-brainer as to why this one should make it to your list. An early wake-up call followed by dressing up in warm clothes and “sensible footwear”. Remember that an early morning balloon ride consequently means that the ground will be wet. Reach the takeoff spot well ahead so you can lend a hand while setting up the balloon. Once bloated and ready to take off, climb aboard and ready to awe at the scenery you will float over. Gasp and keep your cameras at ready, or just let the views sink in for the both of you. Sunlight peeking from behind clouds – witness sunrise and a lot more. Finally, as the hot air balloon descends, toast with some sparkling champagne and muffins to the side. Memories = Made.

Winery tour

Get your honeymoon started with some classy alcohol intervention. Also cool morning walks accompanied by some warm, soothing wine is a hard thing to say no to. The wine is but a beverage to your romance. Keep the sparks lit as you go wine tasting in the popular Central Otago region that is speckled with 200 wineries in its arena. Let your legs and instinct guide you or pre-book a tour that seems most attractive. Wine glasses at ready, begin your honeymoon flirtations with wine!

Bush walk to forest

How does a spellbound walk in the forest sound? That too with your significant other by your side. No walk in the park, this one, though. The Kauri bush walk will have you take a stroll – a hike, rather – amongst some of the most ancient trees in the Waipoua Forest. An already set track runs through native bush. While following the wild call, hand in hand you will reach the central point – the domain of Tane Mahuta, the oldest tree in the vicinity. Want to shake off the weariness? Rumour has it that hot springs are around the corner. So get to finding it and lay your legs to rest when you find it. For those who want to “move it, move it”, there are three trails in the vicinity: Yakas, Four Sisters and Te Matua Ngahere.
