Spooky Halloween Scares: Best Corn Mazes

Come Halloween, the lure of the creep-tastic takes hold of the country. There’s haunted houses, crazy costumes, trick-or-treating galore, but it’s the corn mazes that delight us ecophiles.

Inspired by a fascination with crop circles in the early to mid 90’s, the first few corn mazes were an immediate hit. Within a few years, there were hundreds of mazes mapped out in the United States alone. One of finest examples of agri-tainment in America!

Among the best corn mazes in the country, is the Cherry Crest Farm – right in the heart of the Pennsylvania Dutch Country. An interactive 5 acre corn maze with over 2.5 miles of paths, scenic bridges, and clues – with the average time to victory  about an hour. Maze masters stationed along the way help lost souls in the maze reach their destination.

Designed by Don Frantz famed for ‘The Amazing Maize Maze’, this maze promises to be a fun challenge. Want more activites for the family? Barnyards, wagon rides, obstacle course, straw bale maze, slides and pedal kart tracks will keep your kids happy the entire day.

The Davis Farm Maze in Massachusetts is renowned as one of the best in the world  – with eight acres of a mind-bending maze, designed by Guinness record holder Adrian Fisher. Also on offer here, adventure zones, a zip line, fright nights with flashlights – an adult only event, and a special laser tag event held inside the maze.

In New York, home to the ‘Great Adirondack Corn Maze’, is Tucker Farms. With the theme of Mr. and Mrs. Potato head this year, expect a ton of tater fun. With an after sunset bonfire, flashlight nights in the maze, pumpkin patches and farm tours, there’s something for everyone in the family to enjoy.

With 33 acres and 5 separate mazes in one, Illinois’ Richardson Farm corn maze is arguable the largest in the world and promises limitless fun. If that doesn’t do it for you, zipping along a 700 ft zipline and zorbing down the hill inside a giant 11 ft ball, and a mini train ride should definitely get you there. Fun activities for the entire family include a pumpkin patch, picnic areas, pony rides, giant slides, web climbing, pedal carts and wagon rides.

“Midwest’s original corn maze” — Sever’s Farm in Minnesota is now in its 19th year with a 14-acre maze. This year’s maze has a Fire truck theme and sets up a challenge to discover Firefighter Sever in the maze. The farm has a pumpkin patch, a corn pit, a straw bale maze, hayrides and many other games and rides for children.

For those looking for a dash of post apocalyptic terror in their Halloween fun, consider the Zombie Paintball hayride or the Field of Terror in New Jersey. Also worth looking into is the Zombie Mud Run – a 5 k obstacle course teeming with zombies. Spooky!
