Swiftcover Presents Chris Ramsey’s Comedy Hotspots: A Review

I love me a good laugh. The kind the sends you off your chair, snorting, gasping for a breath, putting tears to your eyes and making your abs a bit sore. It is my favourite kind of laugh. Thanks to the infamous Fringe Festival, Glasgow and Edinburgh have associations with big comedy acts. Apparently, cities north of the Watford Gap are claimed to be pretty hilarious! I personally think I’m pretty funny. But then again, I think I’m the weird kind of funny. I do weird things to make people like Angus laugh, and I’m totally okay with that.

SwiftCover GIGS

This month, we had the chance to attend Swiftcover Presents Chris Ramsey’s Comedy Hotspots. Although I am oh-so-funny, I decided we would let the professionals give us a laugh. Swiftcover has free stand-up gigs in Bristol, Birmingham, Manchester, Newcastle and Glasgow for all comedy fans. Tickets came at a first come, first served basis with limited seats. The Glasgow show was held at The Stand, a local comedy venue in the West End, headlined by Ed Gamble and supported by Matt Winning. Since we got to bring a plus one, we brought our favourite funny friend, Ross.

Due to our packed schedule, we arrived to The Stand a wee bit late. A woman who I assume worked for Swiftcover swiftly (see what I did there?) handed us a few beers and told us to sit at the only table available — the very front of the stage. Ross, not so keen on getting picked on, hid behind us as we made our way towards the front. And oh man, Matt did not let us sit without poking a bit of fun at us for being so late. But hey, gotta laugh at ourselves right?

The jokes keep coming…

We got settled in with a few beers and munchies, and Matt challenged us all to post a funny joke on twitter with the hashtag #SwiftJokes. Angus went with his all-time favourite: What time does Andy Murray go to bed? About ten-ish! Ross, on the other hand, went with a much more inappropriate joke, one which I’m sure Swiftcover had to censor.

Putting in some quick twitter jokes to #SwiftJokes during the break

Of course, since we had the pleasure of sitting in the very front, we got quite some jokes aimed straight at us. Ed Gamble gave us a hilarious run for our money. During one of his acts, he told us a story about a man he sat next to on a plane who had vomited in his vomit bag, all the while staring into his eyes. Ed proceeded to demonstrate this further by taking Angus, staring straight into his eyes and imitating the loudest, most intense vomiting noise for an entire two minutes. Both Angus and Ed turned bright red and Angus tried hard to maintain eye contact. The entire room was in tears. I was off my seat laughing at the site of them!

The verdict:

Overall, the night was a great success. Ross had a great time topping up on as many beers as he could, and I’m sure I gained another ab muscle or two from all the laughing. Go see Ed Gamble at the Fringe if you have the chance, he’s a ton of fun and his tweets and hilarious. We would highly recommend going to Swiftcover’s gigs, we promise you you’ll have a great laugh!
