ParkLives Week 2: Basketball

This week has been intense. You know it’s graduation season when you haven’t bought food for a week because Angus’ parents and all our friends’ parents have been taking us out for lunch and dinner. Not that I’m complaining.

For this week’s Parklives challenge, we decided to do another activity different from FT Fit last week. We decided on Basketball at 6pm Wednesday night at Victoria Park.

For me, basketball brings back the memories to the good ‘ol days in high school and freshman year of college, where I was fit enough to sprint down the court and back with the ball dribbling beside me, no sweat. Then, I could do so many tricks and was the three-point shot queen. However, that was six years ago. I haven’t touched a basketball since. So when ParkLives had basketball as one of the community-building activities, Angus suggested we give it a shot. Funny thing is, though it’s been awhile since I’ve played, Angus has never played in his life. At 6’3″, you would have thought he would have schooled all the kids in the yard. But alas, that was not the case.

We cycled to the ParkLives basketball event, just to get our hearts pumping. Once we got there, we realised how funny we probably seemed. One small Asian-American girl who hasn’t touched a basketball in years and one tall Scottish guy who doesn’t know what to do with a basketball, versus people who actually play on a daily basis. But hey, it’s more about community-building right?

The greatest part about cycling in Glasgow is the copious amount of signs that lead you to your destination.

The coach, Rebecca (I think that was her name?) welcomed us and introduced us to the other two guys we were going to play against. Our opponents were a father-son duo, both energetic and ready for some ball. So we started warming up, me showing Angus how to do a lay-up and some rules of pick-up and me, attempting to calibrate my shots. Then we started the game.

Rusty is one word to describe how we started off. We were getting our butts kicked by the father and son duo, who clearly have been playing more than we have.

However, after about halfway through our game, we realised time was on our side. They started getting tired, and we were just getting warmed up. Angus became the rebound master and I kept up a fast pace, tiring the duo out until we started making a majority of our shots. Then, miraculously, we took the lead and finished with a WIN. Or at least I think, because I stopped keeping score.

Whatever the score ended up being, Angus and I (and the father and son) had a great time playing some ball while doing some community-building with ParkLives. Win or lose, it was not about the competition. ParkLives gave us the opportunity to meet new people in the neighborhood while having fun outside. We can’t wait until next week’s activity!

Community-building at its finest
