Surfing In Miami – Best Spots, Season & Tips

Tags: surfing miami

Miami may not be a popular Florida surf destination, but it may surprise you that we have some pretty decent waves here. With nearly year around warm clear water with nice bottom sand, novice and veteran surfers alike can get enough thrills in our Surfing places.

Kite surfing, windsurfing, and paddle surfing, are also very popular and each have their own corner on our beaches and co-exist with surfing.

Best Surfing Season

The end of the hurricane season, which runs from June to November, is when the best waves surface. So, surfers could expect decent waves around October to December. Also, some monitor the conditions on Surfline or other sites and then figure out how much time to spend in the water before a hurricane may make a landfall.

Surfing in hurricane weather is definitely not encouraged and we haven’t suffered from any hurricanes for many years now, but as they pass by our shores, they could blow strong winds. Our beaches don’t close, but lifeguards put up the red flags and you could observe some amazing barrels!

Keep in mind that toward the end of the year, the water temperature drops and a wetsuit is highly recommended. Early spring around April is also good season to surf in Miami.

Water is typically calm during the rest of the year with occasional 1 to 2 ft high waves. If you’re a beginner, Miami is probably one of the best places to learn in Florida.

Best Surfing Spots

Miami surfing spots are not known for great waves, but our storm swells could become extremely challenging even for the advanced. Although waves can form anywhere along Miami shores, the following best surfing spots are off Miami Beach island:

  • South Pointe surfing corner – At the most southern tip of the island, across from South Pointe Park, is the most popular spot where South Beach surfers typically meet for its awesome waves. You’ll find all levels there and it can get pretty crowded. Paddling out is fairly easy, but be careful with the shallow sandbars and the rocks by the pier.
  • Haulover Beach inlet – The best open space to surf in Miami! Located at the northern tip of Miami Beach island, you won’t be facing any concrete buildings. It’s a beautiful spot popular among North Miami surfers, specially after a storm. It has nice soft bottom sand with pristine clear water. Waves rarely break and you could use a shortboard or longboard.

Staying on Miami Beach island, specially near South Beach, will allow you to easily find surfboard rentals, connect with other surfers and catch some nice waves. Enjoy surfing in Miami and be safe! In case you need to fill your evenings, checkout these cool evening spots too.
