Fishing in Miami Beach Area & Best Fishing Spots

With Florida waters having a large selection of the world fishes, Fishing in Miami area is a great way to spend at least half a day of your vacation after having covered most interesting places to see in Miami. Year around, charter boats with savvy captains can take you to the best fishing spots, making a Mahi Mahi or a Grouper catch a breeze.

Whether you’re a novice or an experienced deep sea fisher, you’ll quickly realize that fishing in Miami is one of the best adventures to experience.

If you’re visiting Miami between November and May, you’re in luck! It’s the best fishing season when most types of fishes can be found and the weather is pleasant enough to be on a boat. Charter boats of all sizes can be hired and leave from Miami and Miami Beach.  Here are a few things to keep in mind if you will go out fishing in Miami with a charter boat:

  • Ask the charter company if you can bring your children fishing with you. Some boats have a minimum age requirement for their passengers.
  • Charter boats rental costs depend on the rental period and how far you’d like to go out deep sea fishing.
  • Make sure to reserve several days if not weeks ahead, specially in high season when charter boats are the busiest.
  • Call around to shop for the best deals and go with a reputable operator with a knowledgeable captain such as Sea Cross charters. They make your experience worth while and guide you well to catch something. You’ll likely not return disappointed.

A much cheaper option to the hundreds of dollars charter boats charge is the group boat fishing experience, also known as party fishing. Instead of renting your own boat, you can go out on fishing trips with other people.  The only downside of this option is that you won’t get much attention from the crew. Group boat fishing experiences are meant for those who’d like to spend some time in the ocean and try fishing.

The oldest operator of group boat fishing in Miami is Kelley Fishing Fleet. They leave from Haulover Park marina, at the northern tip of Miami Beach island, and offer several fishing trips including late night ones! All trips include a necessary fishing license, free bait and a fishing tackle, just bring your sunscreen and some snacks.

Onshore Fishing in Miami Beach area

Another option is to ditch the boat idea completely and fish from shore. Here’s the best fishing spots in Miami Beach and around:

  • The newly renovated South Point Park 450 foot long pier is a beautiful place to fish from. You can admire the ocean, Miami skylines and passing by cruise ships, all at the same time! No entrance fee is charged and recreation fishing is allowed.
  • The half mile long Newport Fishing pier is another fine spot. Located at Bal Harbour, few miles north of South Beach, it’s a historic pier and an entrance fee of few dollars are charged. Because this pier is so far out into the ocean, you can catch all kinds of fish.
  • Oleta State Park, located to the west of the northern tip of Miami Beach island, is a great fishing place, specially for catching inshore fishes like sea trout, snapper and snook. The park offers a fishing opportunity in a natural setting and has many amenities including a restaurant and a concession where you can rent equipments.

Unless you go out with a licensed charter boat or group boat, anglers typically require a shoreline fishing license. Certain variety of fishes such as redfish and grouper are protected and should be released under certain conditions, so check the latest Florida fishing regulations before you go out on your own.

The experience of fishing in Miami will definitely make your vacation memorable! Happy travels!
