Cafe Mueller – Perth, Australia

I have been trying not to write about this place,
No scratch that.
I’ve been gluttonous, desperately yearning to keep this one little gem to myself.
But as We approached Our last date together while I was still a Miss, And we happened to be in Perth for a few weeks. I thought it was about time to share.
Around 5 years ago when I was a wee junior I went to this fabulous unique restaurant called
Cafe Mueller.
You will not feel like you’re in Perth. Or anywhere else for that matter!
I first found it difficult to find the place with the only clue to my aid being a small Visa Sign on the door, It surely doesn’t help that it is stuck in the suburbs of Perth and in Midland down an unlit street.
As soon as you walk in you are almost assaulted by the scarce visibility of the wall. Every single spot is covered in something beautiful, strange and unusual.
Worldly Treasures, Stuffed Dolls, Old vintage advertisements, Even a Photograph of Tom Cruise circa 1982! Complete with the occasional wandering cat. Heaven!
Amongst the chaos there is beautiful charcoal art displayed by the colorful owner, Artist and all around nice guy; Karl Mueller.
The menu consists of an interchanging Entree, Main and Dessert, showcasing delicious German/European fare. If you’re not into eating whats on offer then you have no option but to opt out of that particular course. It’s a harsh reality to face but the food is well worth the gamble.
Especially if you are prone to eating absolutely anything!
The joint is also BYO but will serve ice cold water and a few selected soft drinks.
Fun Fact: Cafe Mueller has stood for 25 years. One of their first customers was 65 when she first visited this little spot in the middle of unassuming midland and she just recently celebrated her 90th birthday party!
Now this is not for everyone..
3 courses of food will take you a minimum of two to three hours to complete due to the laid back style of Cafe Mueller. The prices are unbelievably cheap for the quality and unique experience but that is exactly what it is. An experience.
Karl will often wander around to your table greeting you and Showcasing his delicious wit and comedy (as a performer at the latest fringe festival in Perth).
But the home cooked fare is what everyone keeps coming back for.

Although I have dined at Cafe Mueller many times for three courses, we ended up skipping the entree due to time constrictions and had the Main Schnitzel and shared the Baked cheesecake. Many people who review this place will rave about the bread that is served before the courses but It is more of a revelation than I can explain. Fresh, Delicious, herby and seasoned with caraway and an almost damper like consistency. It was transformed into crumbs in an instant! Not just your usual Bread!
The ever favourite schnitzel was then served with a creamy potato side and a drenched lettuce salad and was unbelievable, The Chicken was cooked to perfection, well seasoned and incredibly flavoursome!
Last but not least the Crumbly Baked Ricotta cheesecake. Warm and buttery that melted in your mouth as Karl popped it on the table with a humorous “Sorry It’s so fresh”
That’s fine Karl, Sorry I didn’t write this rave review earlier.
Cafe Mueller is Open Thursday to Sunday 6:30pm till midnight
