5 Things To Know Before You Start Travelling

1. It can be lonely

When you're in your home town, there are certain institutions which almost ensure friendship. School, Work, Family, friends of friends etc. when you're traveling you don't necessarily have these institutions which means making friends can be hard. You have to make the effort to go out, meet new people and basically ask them out on a friend date. Otherwise you'll see them once and may not see them again. Meaning you die of loneliness. No one wants that.

2. It doesn't have to cost (Much)

Obviously they are costs associated with travel. Flights, accommodation, transport, Food etc are not things you can do without. We find a lot of people never commit to traveling because they think it will cost tens of thousands of dollars/pounds/euros/bananas but it doesn't have to! There are plenty of cheaper options. For flights check out skyscanner. Try to stay away from Hotels or places that do not have a kitchen to utilise and cut down costs of eating out constantly. Try Airbnb or Search for affordable Hostels here.
Transport you can buy weekly or monthly transport tickets or use Uber Pool in cities that have it! It splits your ride in half and allows you to meet new people! For food you don't necessarily have to cook, but stay away from you tourist destinations and fast food. You can almost always find cheaper, better food from a local source.

3. Places may not be as you expect.

One of the biggest things we've learnt traveling is not to have any expectations going to a place. Some of the most idolized places in the world are dirty, overcrowded and full of rude people, equally some more undesirable place can be surprisingly amazing. The trick is to go into every country/city with an open mind and the positives will present themselves!

4. If you dont need it, Don't Bring it

when we initially moved over to base ourselves in Europe we found out (the hard way) that Keira was a serial overpacker and we both pretty much had a panic attack every time we got the the airport and had to rearrange baggage etc. Bring the basics only and be vicious!

You don't want to be slapped with a overweight fine! If we have a long trip coming up We usually do a few rounds of packing which helps cut out the unnecessary baggage. Each airline has different weight limits so you may be within range for you departing flight but might not be the same for the rest of them, Meaning you may have to pay a fine at the airport which can get very costly especially if you are doing this for every transfer. To add to this, Carrying the overweight luggage and stuffed backpacks that most likely will break a strap or a wheel, storing it, paying for larger taxis to be able to fit it all, getting to the airport early and trying to be the first person on the plane so you can take up overhead space. basically. it's a hassle! Pack Light, Bring a weeks worth of clothes and find a Laundromat instead!

5. Travel can really broaden your horizons (If you allow it to!)

For us Travelling has always been about change. Getting to step out of your normality and get a perspective on the different ways of the world can broaden the mind and completely change your life and outlook. But you do have to allow it to. Don't spend the entire time stuck to your travelling buddy or inside your Airbnb room. Go out and meet new people, Don't be afraid to be alone and try to live as the locals do as much as possible. Do not spend your time eating in Mcdonalds or grabbing coffee from Starbucks. Ask a local cafe worker where they like to eat! You will be guaranteed good and cheap food and a new cultural experience in a family run kitchen. Or buy some fresh produce from a local market. The world is your oyster! You have to make a conscious effort to step out of your comfort zone and if you do begin to, you wont want to stop travelling.
