The Travel Bug loves nothing more than ‘splorin’ with his favourite humans and he’s a big fan of Italy. Over the past few years, he’s been lucky enough to travel all over the country on his holidays and recently bagged himself some last minute flights and a nice AirBnB in Naples. While out eating pizza and drinking a little too much Limoncello, this is what he found out:
Birthplace of Pizza
The world’s first EVER pizzeria, Antica Pizzeria Port’Alba, was opened in Napoli way back in 1830. This makes Napoli the home of pizza and the original pizzeria is still operating to this day. TTB loves pizza. The classic Margerhita pizza was named after Queen Margherita Theresa Goivanni, after she visited the city back in 1889. TTB thinks he should probably have a pizza named after him. He’s sure that Bug Pizza would be a huge hit with tourists.
See Naples And Die
The famous saying ‘See Naples And Die’ comes from the fact that Napoli is said to be so beautiful and filled with priceless treasures that you can’t possibly top the experience after seeing it, so you’d be as well being dead. TTB is a *touch* worried about this as he’s got a birthday party next weekend back in Wales and he’s really excited about going.
Vesuvius
Naples lies at the base of Mount Vesuvius, the still-active volcano which devastated the cities of Pompeii and Herculaneum in 79AD. Both cities have been preserved and attract millions of visitors each year. Naples, and other surrounding cities, are in what’s known as ‘the Red Zone’ which indicates that they are unlikely to survive the impact of another eruption. The Vesuvius Observatory is located in the area and observes the volcanoes activity 24 hours a day in order to give as much notice as possible of when Vesuvius decides to strike again… TTB actually climbed up the side of the volcano on his holiday and the photo of him on this post is him sitting having a rest at the top. It’s *very* steep…
