Narrowest house in Amsterdam

Amsterdam is known around the world for its array of tall, crooked and narrow houses. A form of 17th-century tax evasion, residents didn’t want to pay tax based on the width of the façade of the house, so got creative and built upwards and with depth!

Singel 7 is the house with the narrowest façade in the world, barely reaching two metres wide. This is one of the most unique places in Amsterdam to visit and say you’ve taken a picture of.

Zevenlandenhuizen

View this post on Instagram

The Zevenlandenhuizen (houses of seven countries) are located in the Roemer Visscherstraat, and are a collection of exotic looking mansions, built by architect Tjeerd Kuipers in 1894. The people of Amsterdam suffered from something called exotism, a desire for everything ‘far away’. These seven houses in a row represent different styles of different countries in Europe: Germany, France, Italy, Spain, Holland, England and Russia. Despite being a very pretty view, you won’t see any tourists here, since it is in the middle of a neighbourhood, just a few streets away from the Rijksmuseum! . . . #holland #iamsterdam #visitamsterdam #amsterdamcity #zevenlandenhuizen #europe #citytrip #amsterdam #roadtrip #travelphotography #instatravel #europe_pics #europe_greatshots #europe_vacations #wanderlust #amazingwanderlust #picoftheday #travelgram #travelfacts #travelblogger #cityguide #streetphotography #summer #canonnederland #foto27fotolocatie #foto27nl #foto27

Wouldn’t it be great to travel without having to move? It’s possible in Amsterdam when you visit the street of the Zevenlandenhuizen.

Zevenlandenhuizen translates to the “seven countries houses”. Built in 1894 each of the seven houses represents an architectural style from a different European country. The country names are above the doors; definitely one of the more unknown things to do in Amsterdam, go take some great pictures for the ‘gram!

Museum Ons’ Lieve Heer op Solder

View this post on Instagram

Ons’ Lieve Heer op Solder, or Our Lord in the Attic in English, is exactly as its name says. It’s a secret church hidden away in the attic of a canal house. Turns out there are a ton of hidden churches in Amsterdam . This is definitely one of the coolest museums I’ve been to and would definitely recommend if you are ever around.

In the 1600’s it was prohibited to celebrate mass, so religious practices had to be done in secret. Our Lord in the Attic is a Catholic church hidden away in the attic of one of Amsterdam’s 17th-century canal townhouses. Now, it has been turned into a uniquely preserved museum, better yet – it’s pink! As one of the oldest museums in Amsterdam, second only to the Rijksmuseum, this is one of the unique things to do in Amsterdam.
