Top 5 things to do in Lommel, Belgium

Lommel is a city and municipality in north-western Belgium, right on the Dutch border. With a number of family attractions, cultural activities and national parks in the region, it’s an excellent destination for a family holiday. Lommelse Sahara

To see pictures, you’d never guess that the Lommelse Sahara is in Belgium. Or even in Europe. This nature reserve is a huge expanse of sand dunes and pine forests reaching all the way to the horizon.  Whether you want to enjoy a long walk through the dunes and the lake or want to experience the Sahara desert all for yourself, the Lommel Sahara is definitely recommended!

Lommel German war cemetery

This was cemetery is the largest German military cemetery in Western Europe outside of Germany itself. Located in Kattenbos, a small town in the Lommel region, the cemetery was established in 1946 and contains over 39,000 established burials and over 6,000 known burials. A huge percentage of those are from World War II, and around 500 are from World War I. This cemetery is definitely for those interested in European history.

Bobbejaanland amusement park

And now for something totally different: Bobbejaanland Amusement Park. This incredible theme park is just a 30 minute drive from Lommel and is one of the favourite family attractions in Belgium. The park was founded by a much-loved Belgian singer, Bobbejaan Schoepen. He reached international popularity in the 50s and 60s and retained ownership of the amusement park until 2004! Bobbejaanland consists of more than 50 attractions, including the Giant Wheel, the Indiana River waterslide, the Revolution Rollercoaster and the Air Race Rollercoaster. Not to be missed!

Shopping in Lommel

Lommel is an excellent destination for a dose of history and culture during your trip. It’s also a wonderful shopping destination! Visit the Frankish marketplace on the square, with antique water pumps and historic statues. If you want to visit a more bustling metropolis, the centre of Eindhoven is a 45 minute drive north into the Netherlands. Eindhoven is a large city with an excellent high street shopping centre and a plethora of museums, restaurants and bars.
