Cayo Jutias and Vinales Valley

One day at the beach in Cayo Jutias

One of the most beautiful island in Cuba situated approximately 60Km northwest from Vinales. Undiscovered beach is a sight to be seen, 3Km long blanket of sand that adorns the northern coast. The road leading there are for most of the year so littered with potholes that they are more hole than road. Potholes notwithstanding and the adventure getting there, are not to be missed.

There are not hotels, at about two hours  from Vinales is close enough to be visited as day trip as it is only island where cubans can go freely.
This is actually great, as you can walk around and explorely freely. There is only one bar with great views of the ocean.
Vinales Valley
The town's slow pace wide open spaces and fresh air provide a striking contrast to the capital's hustle and bustle. Riding thorough endless field of green tobacco and fertile red soil. We passed local farmers harvesting the leaves that become Cuba's world famous cigars. There are a ton of natural cave formations, rivers to swim in and hike along and a number of beaches and cayos along the northern coast like Cayo Levisa and Cayo Jutias that have amazing empty beaches.

The tobacco farms tours offered by locals are quite informative and include detailed explanation on the processing of the leaves and demonstration of how to roll a cigar from a local farmer. Hikes through the mogotes are another a great way to get out and appreciate the valley's unique landscape. Horse riding is another great way to get beyond the tourism bubble.
