Project 365: Day 357 – Mornings at Marina

23rd June 2015 – Chennai, India

Home is near, I can almost smell the fish flavour

And hear the sound of my mother, crying marriage.

Fortunately, there are still a few sights along the way

Until the destination, and the start of a new page.

Playtime’s over, kid – Chennai, India

I reached Chennai last evening, and went straight to bed. I wanted to count sheep, but instead counted all the countries in the last 12 months. After 3 continents, and 35 countries, I was back home.

Well, technically, not yet. Home is still 1400 KM away, tucked in the northern regions of Kerala. And it is going to take me at least a couple of weeks for me to get there, on my trusted motorbike. But first, I have to stay a few days in Chennai to sort out some personal stuff.

I woke up early in the morning today, and just sat in bed. Not knowing what to do. After all, this was Chennai. I’ve lived here, seen every bit of it. What do I still have to see here? With not much options, I took the motorbike and stepped out to see sunrise at the Marina beach.

I’ve been to the other famous beach of Chennai – Elliots beach – once on this trip already, and it would be a crime if I didn’t mention Marina on this project. After all, Marina is the longest beach in India and the 11th longest beach in the world. Well, one of the reasons why I rarely went to this beach was because bathing and swimming are prohibited here, due to the strong undercurrents. But for now, I had a sunrise to soak in.

And it was a glorious one. The crows spotted the yellow horizon, moving around in flocks. And on the ground, the morning joggers didn’t follow a crowd, but were enough in numbers to form a formidable one. A few lovebirds sat perched next to the empty beach stalls – which open only in the evenings – and exchanged timid kisses, only to break away when they saw me pass by with a camera. And in the midst of all that commotion, the sun gradually rose up and went about its daily business.

Now I know for sure, that I am truly home.
