Travel to the Mozambique Quirimbas National Park,  located in six central districts of the Cabo Delgado Province, Northern Mozambique and stretching about 7 506 square kilometers between mainland and ocean, inter-tidal and 11 island habitats.

The creation of the Quirimbas National Park is unique: huge celebrations and official functions took place on Ibo Island, the Park headquarters, in June 2002 when the Park was declared.  This was the unanimous decision of local communities, other stake holders and NGOs all interested in working together to protect the region.

The goal is “to conserve the diversity, abundance, and ecological integrity of all physical and biological resources in the park area, so that they may be enjoyed and used productively by present and future generations”. The Park is extremely selective about high quality, low impact tourism developments where the communities also benefit.

The Quirimbas Archipelago supplies crucial habitat for feeding turtles, crab plovers, and migratory birds and is also an important nursery area for bottlenose and humpback dolphins and whales. Diverse corals grow in the National Park due to several underwater channels running deep near Quilalea, Ibo and Matemo Islands. Mangroves, sea grasses, sandy and rocky shores all have high biodiversity value in the Archipelago.

The Quirimbas Archipelago, especially the Stone Town of Ibo Island, is evidence of cultural interaction and harmonization – a rich European-Arabian-Indian-African heritage to protect.
