Developed by the french architect, Le Corbusier, it is among the union territories of India. Chandigarh word came from 2 words- Chandi (the goddess avatar of Maa Parvati) and Garh(fort). The name has came from Chandi Mandir which is near Panchkula district. Its regions include Panchkula, Mohali, Zirakpur, Kharar and Kurali. It is one of the most planned cities known for its architecture and urban design. It has its famous places like  Rose garden, Rock garden, the romantic Sukhna lake, Open hand monument, Martyr’s memorial, Geometric hill and Tower of shadow. It is also known as to be the first smoke free city of India. It is also known as mini Singapore.

1) Chandigarh facts #1 – Open hand monument

This is the most famous monument of Chandigarh. It is a symbolic structure located in Chandigarh. An interesting fact about it is that this is their’s official emblem which means peace and prosperity and unity of mankind. It also sends a message of one hand to give and also to receive. It is 26 meters high. It is located in sector 1 in Capitol complex in backdrop of Himalayan hill range of Shivalik Mountains. It appears like a flying bird. The surface is covered with polished steel and steel shafts to facilitate flow of the wind.

2) Chandigarh facts #2 – 7V’s in Chandigarh

The network of roads here is called the 7 V’s with the vertical roads called the paths ( running northeast and southwest) and horizontal roads are called margs (running northwest and southeast). The Road V1 crosses the provinces, does not enter the cities. The road V2 is the national road, it meets the V3’s. The road V3 is only used by fast vehicles, no sidewalks and no paths of direct access. The road V4 is for slow traffic. It provides access to services of daily life: shops, markets etc. The road V5 originates from V4’s. It leads towards the houses. Then comes road V6 which reaches the doorstep of the houses that V5 itself does not. At last the road V7  feeds the green zones, great side walking and serves the schools, playgrounds etc. Buses will only ply on V1, V2, V3 AND V4 roads. A wall shall seal V3 roads forms the sector. So, in short these roads connect to each other but might lead to different destinations. This is why this is called V7’s.

3) Chandigarh facts #3  – The sectors of Chandigarh

The city is divided into various sectors. The french architect who gave the design of the city formed it with analogous to the human body. The head being conceptualized in Capitol complex in sector 1, heart being sector 17, lungs being the open space and greenery, at last, the 7V’s and educational institutions. The city is based on four major functions, living, working, taking care of the body, spirit and circulation. Basically, the Capitol complex comprise the secretariat, High court and legislative. The residential sectors comprise the living areas whereas city center and industrial areas comprises the working part. Among all of it, the famous center of Chandigarh people is of sector 17. Although the  city is covered with educational, medical and cultural services, major part of it belongs in sector 10, 11, 12,14 and 26.  Tree plantation and landscaping have always been an important part of the city’s master plan. This is the sole reason why there are 26 flowering species and 22 tree species at various points across city.

4) Chandigarh facts #4 – Sukhna lake

This is considered as the most romantic place of the city. Whether a person is in love or despair, you feel like connected to the place. Although designed by the famous french architect Le Corbusier around 5000 years ago and divided into 60 sectors, it was decided to revise the city plan.
