Holy Monastery of the Virgin Mary Chozoviotissa on Amorgos

Amorgos is a lovely, quiet island in The Cyclades.

There aren’t too many of your fellow travellers here as most people get off the ferry at Santorini or stay on the ferry until Naxos / Mykonos.

Cat lovers will appreciate the role of the community cat here, where stray cats are kept healthy and well fed by the local people.

The big attraction on Amorgos is the Holy Monastery of the Virgin Mary Chozoviotissa on the opposite side of the island from Katapola. My advice is to catch the early morning bus to the monastery and then walk back via Chora. There is a signposted footpath.

This 11th-century monastery has a dramatic cliffside location with views of the Aegean. There are many steps both to get to the entrance and within the monastery itself. Try to go when no tour parties are visiting and you’ll be able to appreciate the calm a little better.

Males should remember to dress appropriately at the monastery. The monks must not see your knees. Ladies should ideally wear a long-sleeved top and a skirt that goes below the knee.
