Figueira da Foz, also known as Figueira for short, is a city and a municipality in the Coimbra District, in Portugal.
I reached Figueira on the train from Coimbra. The journey takes an hour and the train starts from Coimbra Station in the centre of the city before heading up to Coimbra B and then on to Figueira station, the end of the line.
I headed away from the station in a straight line towards the centre of the city. After about 15 minutes I arrived at the start of the esplanade. The beach is one of the widest in Europe. It took 10 minutes to walk to the water’s edge and the sand felt soft to my bare feet.
The old town is compact and has plenty of places to eat and drink. There’s a bullring and the interesting Museu Municipal Santos Rocha with its paintings, armaments, and archaeology sections. There’s a wide variety of architectural styles, colourful buildings, and old churches.
