Top UK attractions in 2015

Now that winter is beginning to fade, it’s time to look ahead to what should be a great year for events in the UK. And here are some highlights to look out for.

London Marathon

One of the premier attractions in the UK springtime is the London Marathon. Taking place this year on 26 April, and winding through the picturesque streets of London, it’s a great day out for participants and spectators alike!

The Boat Race

The famous Boat Race that sees the teams of Cambridge and Oxford University in battle is another great quintessentially British event. The route takes the rowers up the River Thames on 11 April and it’s the perfect opportunity to celebrate this great institution of British life.

Summer solstice

Although the solstice celebrations at Stonehenge are somewhat more limited than in the past, it’s still a great place to get in touch with your inner druid. This year English Heritage are allowing 20,000 people to partake in this magical event that focuses on the sun’s passage across the sacred stones.

Aintree horse racing

The horse race is another great British event that everybody must experience at least once. And where better to attend than the historic Aintree racecourse in Liverpool. This course is the historic site of the Grand National and every year thousands flock to partake in the wonderful atmosphere and maybe even back a winner!

Music festivals

Although Glastonbury has already sold out, going to one of the hundreds of Music Festivals that are dotted around the country is a great way to spend a weekend. So whether you find yourself in fancy dress at Bestival on the Isle of Wight, or checking out the latest hip indie band at the ultra-cool Truck Festival near Oxford, you’re pretty much guaranteed some high quality entertainment.

VE Day

Friday 8 May will mark the 70th anniversary of Victory in Europe Day. Whilst living memory of this war may be fading, it’s still an important time to celebrate the nation’s history. So look forward to a host of WWII themed events from aerial displays, street parties and of course, lots of bunting!

Shakespeare’s anniversary

And finally, 2015 will be the 400th anniversary of the death of William Shakespeare. Beloved as our nation’s poet, there is expected to a host of events celebrating his life on St George’s Day, the day the bard passed away in his hometown of Stratford-upon-Avon.
