ANZSCO classifications update

Under the Australia immigration program, all skilled visa applicants are required to select an occupational classification from one of the Gazetted skilled occupation lists. These occupational Classifications come from the Australian and New Zealand Standard Classification of Occupations, commonly known as Anzsco.

For many years, ANZSCO has been considered to be out of date. Many newly emerging skilled occupations are not included and are extremely difficult to ‘fit’ into the current classifications.

We were pleased to learn that ANZSCO is undergoing a comprehensive review. This should result in a better classification system which will reflect the contemporary labour market.

The public have been invited to take part in this consultation process. The initial consultation process is seeking feedback on the following areas:

  • Accounting services
  • Administrative services
  • Aged care and disability services
  • Childcare services
  • Computer system and related services
  • Education and training
  • Financial and insurance services
  • Library and other information services
  • Management and related consulting services
  • Market research and advertising services
  • Scientific research services
  • Statistical services
  • Welfare and social assistance services.

Based on our extensive experience across the range of skilled visa categories, FC Lawyers will be providing a submission on the issues we see in the current ANZSCO occupational descriptions. We will also be discussing our ideas with local businesses who employ skilled workers and often find a gap in the current occupation choices.

Submissions should be made through the ABS Consultation Hub by the 28 April 2023.
