Hiking the Cliffs of Moher

As the final part in the first series of Microadventures (Microadventures Ireland), I decided on a day tour to the Cliffs of Moher in the West of Ireland. Having stayed overnight, I began hiking the Cliffs of Moher from Doolin and until the visitor centre, the trail was mostly empty aside from one other person.

Hiking the Cliffs of Moher – Dangers

Ireland had just experienced the tail end of an ex-hurricane, Ophelia, but it must be said that wind is to be expected at this time of year. In terms of the trail condition, it is mostly good, sometimes a little close to the edge and also broken in parts. On one occasion, I jumped over a fence rather than step through a stream and for the most part, I kept a good distance from the edge which was important carrying a backpack this size.

Best place to see the Cliffs of Moher

By far, the best place to see the Cliffs of Moher is to the north of O’Briens Tower. Having jumped over the fence, you proceed down a very steep hill and the trail turns left to a small headland/viewpoint. At the same time, the views are particularly nice to the south of the visitor centre and this is certainly the nicest part of the trail for hiking.

Honestly, I feel the visitor centre is hugely disappointing for a number of reasons. I do understand the reasons for it being there but the mass crowds and general commercialization of these cliffs is interfering with nature at best.

Microadventure Tour to the Cliffs of Moher

Anyway, I still recommend hiking the Cliffs of Moher or at the very least, you should visit just a section of the trail. If you are interested in joining me on a Microadventure Tour to the Cliffs of Moher, please do not hesitate to drop me a message.
