4 Reasons to Visit Jeju Island, South Korea

Jeju Island is a remarkable holiday destination island situated off the coast of South Korea, which has much to offer Muslim travelers. With enthralling landscapes, enchanting lifestyles and exciting activities, there is much to do and see here. Jeju Tourism Association recently released a guide which focuses on Muslim-friendly travel information in September 2015 – listing out the top attractions, shopping, restaurants and prayer facilities available – promoting itself as a Muslim-friendly destination, in a bid to boost more Muslim visitor arrivals. Here are four reasons why Muslim travelers should visit Jeju Island, South Korea:

Exciting Experiences: Find out more about the island’s unique culture and lifestyle with an abundance of activities available. Participate in traditional village activities such as making kimchi and plucking mandarins and explore the wonders of the gorgeous landscapes by walking through evergreen fields, forests and scenic coastlines.  The more active travelers can climb Mt. Hallasan, which is the highest mountain in South Korea and partake in several leisure activities such as horseback riding, water biking and more.

Sensational Shopping: Jeju Island has lots to offer shopaholics – with something for all kinds of shopping tastes and budgets. Visit Jeju Jungang Underground Shopping Mall and Baojian Street for local and brand shops and duty free shops such as JDC, Shilla and Lotte for international cosmetics, perfumes, clothes and accessories brands. There are several souvenir shops around the island including Dalwoo Amethyst and Born Jeju for authentic local specialty products, and of course a visit to the Jeju City Traditional Five-Day Market and Seomun Market is a must for a wide range of products from clothing to flowers.

Delicious Dining: There are several dining options for Muslim travelers. Try out the classic Japanese Shabu-Shabu dish at Cheonhaecheon and delicious North Indian food at Bagdad restaurant – both these restaurants have a halal menu available. There are also several seafood-only restaurants in Jeju Island, which is a great option for Muslims. Seopji Haenyeouijip features abalone dishes, and is one of the favourites here. Fish foodies are in for a treat in Jeju Island – Badajanchi and Yeonsong galchiyori restaurants are famous for their grilled fish dishes, while Tamrabadang restaurant serves the mouth watering spicy fish soup, which is locally known as Haemultang.

Prayer Facilities: Jeju Island has an Islamic Center situated 2 km from Jeju City Center, ensuring that visitors will have a place to conduct their prayers. Certain hotels situated a few kilometers from Seogwipo City Centre, such as Kenshington Jeju Hotel, POL-A Resort Jeju and WE Hotel, also have multi-faith prayer rooms.
