Everything You Need To Know About Bonefishing Cat Island Bahamas

By Brian Butler

If you enjoy trout fishing, then you are really going to love the challenging of fishing for bones. Bonefishing Cat Island Bahamas is incredibly challenging and fun. These are among some of the smartest fish that you will ever come across, which makes the real hard to catch. Also, it isn't possible to succeed by using your old trout fishing skills. You will need the tips that follow if you want to attract, capture and haul in these amazing fish.

You may never have thought of fish as being able to smell, but bonefish are actually quite good at picking up on fragrances. Thus, if you are going out on the flats, you might want to carefully wash your hands in some of the dirt and gravel that surrounds the area. This will allow you to blend in.

You shouldn't smoke any cigarettes or cigars, use scented products or spray on cologne. You also want to wear cloths that match with the natural elements around you. Leave your bright, Hawaiian shirt at home and opt for muted, neutral tones instead.

Always have a pair of wading boots when heading out to the flats. Even before you leave for your trip you should start breaking these boots in. This is the best way to prevent painful blisters. Bonefish can be easily spooked and you may find yourself wading for a very long time before actually spotting some action.

Because of their flashy metallic color, bones can sometimes blend right into their surroundings. When traveling with a guide, take careful direction from this professional. Trust in his or her ability to spot bones. Guides have the most experience and the greatest ability to see the fish that you cannot.

When bonefish feed, this is the perfect time to position your fly. You want to drop it almost right on their heads. Let your fly hit the bottom of the flat and then drag it through the sand in short, gentle popping motions. This will give it the appearance of a shrimp that is busy feeding so that it is far more likely to get picked up.

When you're on the flats, always be sure to keep loud noises to a minimum. Bonefish are very intelligent and this is a large part of the reason why they live to be so big. Whenever they suspect a problem in the area, they will immediately start swimming the other way. This is why it is important to avoid dropping things on the boat bottom or stomping around loudly while you are in the boat. Also, be cognizant of the fact that the wind is going to change directions regularly. This means that you are going to make casts according to the direction and speed of the wind. You can get the best results by standing in and away from the wind while practicing your casts at home.

You always have to be stealthy when bonefishing. Keeping quiet and blending in is important. This will allow you to sneak up on your prey and to actually bring a big bonefish in with you rather than having to go home disappointed and entirely empty handed.
