Things I did in Barcelona that you should too

There’s nothing worse than bloggers who visit a city for a weekend and are suddenly an expert on it. You know, like when I wrote a camping survival guide after going a total of one whole time – and there was a full toilet and kitchen block.

So, you’ll be glad to know that I won’t be pimping myself out as your new Spanish Tour Guide, but here are four things I did in Barcelona that you should too.

Go Jet Skiing

Let’s start with the best thing I did while I was there; jet skiing. Obviously, if you don’t like things that get your blood pumping, this isn’t for you – but for the rest of you, this is by far the best way to see the whole of the Barcelona coast in all it’s beauty. Not to mention, it’s fun as fuck.

It cost 150 euros for one jet ski for one hour, with a tour guide who doesn’t do anything tour guide-y except let you follow him so you don’t end up as an extra in the next Sharknado. It’s not cheap, but it’s well worth the money – try to go on a Monday morning like we did, so you don’t get stuck in a group having to wait for stragglers.

Discover the Barcelona Weed Scene

Even though it’s legal to smoke weed in Barcelona, it’s still buried more underground than the Amsterdam coffeeshops. Whilst you can walk down pretty much any road in Amsterdam and find a coffeeshop that’s open to the public, Barcelona’s cannabis clubs are only open to new members via referrals – either from existing members or by applying online. Once you’ve applied you’ll get sent a list of locations and who to ask for (imagine my face asking a 20 year old Spanish fella if his name was Marilyn), and when you arrive you pay a membership fee which is usually between 20-60 euros each depending on how decent the place is. Obviously, if you’re anything like me, you don’t want to be paying membership over and over again to try new places (we literally stuck to the one gaff) so make sure you do your research beforehand to find the best one for you.

Also, the fact it’s still so underground meant two things:

  1. It’s hard to find pics online for research, so you’re best asking someone who’s been before for a recommendation (and referral).
  2. Most places are hidden indoors, so if you like a bit of fresh air and a Summer of 69 vibe when you’re having a joint, you definitely need to do your research.

Get Lost

While we were in Barca, there was a scheduled taxi strike that ended up lasting over a week. All of the city’s taxis were stranded across a huge dual carriageway and it honestly looked like something out of an apocalypse film. I was going to tell you that it took my fella until day four to link the taxi strike to the IRL zombie film scene, and he thought it was just a fancy European system, but to be honest it was me who clearly doesn’t have a brain.

Anyway, because of the strike, we had to walk everywhere – which meant that we were fully crippled after 5 days of over 30,000 steps a day, but we also did a lot of exploring. Getting lost means you’ll find all the nice bars and restaurants, rather than sticking to the overpriced tourist traps on the main strips.

Find a pool

Finally, if you haven’t already booked a hotel make sure you get one with a pool. I honestly didn’t think that we’d use ours, but it was so hot you either needed to be in water or indoors. You could get a spot on the beach of course, but it’s overcrowded as fuck and a long, disgusting walk back covered in sand and sun cream, so just do yourself a favour and invest in a pool.

Until next time.. x
