Adam's Peak (Sri Pada)

Located in a beautiful area of the southern Hill Country, this lofty Peak has sparked the imagination for centuries. It is variously known as Adam's Peak, butterfly Mountain and Sri Pada. This place has been a pilgrimage centre for over 100 years. It is a significant location for all religions in Sri Lanka. These days the pilgrimage season begins on poya days in December and runs until vesak festival in May. The route is illuminated in the season by a string of lights which look very pretty as they snake up the mountainside. out of season you can still do the walk, you'll just need a torch.

It's not only the sacred footprint that pilgrims seek. As the first rays of dawn light up the whole mountain, you are treated to a very breath-taking view, the Hill country rises to the east, while to the west the land slopes towards the sea. As the sun rises higher this eerie triangle shadow races back towards the peak, eventually disappearing into it's base.

Few mountain tops create a comparable impression of isolation or yield so wide and unimpeded a view. Colombo is clearly visible, the very lights of Galle Face distinguishable; the light house south-west around the coast from Beruwala to foul-point are all identifiable.
Adam's Peak has the unique species of forests belonging to the family of Dipterocarpace, which is never found at high altitudes. Visited by many early world travellers, among them the Arab Ibn Batuta and the Venetian Marco Polo, Adam's Peak attained a legendary status as a mystic pilgrimage destination.
