Pigeon Island- Trincomalee

Pigeon Island is located 1 Km away from the Nilaveli beach in Trincomalee. This is one of the best places to see corals. In the year 2003, Pigeon Island was designated as a National Park in Sri Lanka. The island was used by the British before the independence of Sri Lanka for shooting practices during the world war.



The reason that makes Pigeon Island National Park unique, is that it harbours a colony of the most beautiful Blue Rock Pigeons. The national park also contains some of the best remaining coral reefs In Sri Lanka. Many of the 100 species of corals and 300 coral reef fish recorded around Trincomalee area are found in the national park. Juvenile and adult black-tip reef sharks are found are seen around the shallow coral areas. This Adventurous yet breath taking tour of the Island's National Park should undoubtedly be a highlight in your itinerary.


Visitors need to engage in a short boat ride to reach the Island. A visit to the Island could incorporate swimming in the sea, snorkelling, diving and sun bathing. uncontrolled tourism has resulted in the reef degradation and loss of biodiversity and fish density.
